    MSI MS-9121 vs IBM Z-pro Intellistation 6221

They use the same board, but with different bios's. I guess IBM recaps the boards when they get them from MSI, as the pictures on MSI's website shows it has some yellow caps, probalby Fujitsu polymers, and the VRM caps are Nichicons, and the rest are Sanyo's.

On my IBM version, all the yellow caps are replaced by Sanyo OScon's, the Nichicons were replaced by Rubycons, and the rest are the same sanyo's.

First pic is of the MSI, second is of the IBM.

I think IBM has enough clout to specify what caps get installed on the boards they order.

Well, its good they replaced the Nichicon's around the VRM, as this board was made in the 2003 era, I believe when Nichicon had some defects in some of their capacitors.

I believe they are Rubycon MBZ's

          Fake Nichicons?
          by Alex@
          Hi,

I have recently received some Nichicon LKS1J103MESB 10,000uf 63v capacitors. They felt very light when I picked the up so I decided to weigh them. On my admittedly cheap scales they weigh 46grams the spec sheet says they should be 59grams. I tried them on 3 sets of scales and the readings are the same. The seller says that he only buys from mouser and digikey.

Is it possible for them to be real Nichicons? I really want them to be genuine it would save much time and effort. I am recapping an old Audio Dynamics ca2000e amplifier (I know it is an obscure make but...

          Onkyo TA-600D Bad Y (?) caps (and old Nichicons/Sanyos)
          by Scenic
Pulled this Onkyo TA-600D Tapedeck out of storage. Decided to pop the lid before plugging it in.. good thing I did that..

I assume those are Y-caps (?!). They were soldered across the power switch (i.e. from the live side to the switched side ; like a bridge over the switch)

Any idea what to replace them with? For now I've just removed them and everything works fine, but they surely weren't there just for decoration purposes..

I'm planning to do a basic restoration. Dating it was pretty easy thanks to the...

Topcat's Ultimate Pentium 4 Retro Gamer!
          by Topcat
I'll open this build with the comment that the Pentium 4 processor was probably my least-favorite CPU; even in Xeons. Netburst processors were hot-running and quite unimpressive performers considering the high clock speeds....but they were capable to a certain extent.....and are now entering the peculiar era of 'retro-ness'.

With that said; I was given THIS LITTLE JEWEL last Friday....a gaming rig built on the very CPU I liked the least....but there were some interesting things in it to say the least....and I really don't have a really good P4 retro gamer in my fleet....so....hmmm...yea...lets...
