    Asus A7N8X Deluxe v2.0 (again)

    Having reviewed prior posts as with;
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=2876 and
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/printthread.php?t=5017

Is it not strange to have 6.3V caps on the VRM I/P?
It was my belief there were no 3.3V CPU VRMs on mobos.
Should it not be the case, these caps should be 10V 3300uF?

It may be size constraints, e.g. 10mm diameter led to these
    being installed?

What are the opinions of forum members?

    Thx

you're right, there are no 3.3V VRMs (at least not in the ATX era) but 5V ones.
The A7N8X was one of the last boards that used these, and about every post-Skt462 board used 12V.

      why?
what is the voltage on them?
      is it more than 6.3v?

Re: Asus A7N8X Deluxe v2.0 (again)

        they are on +5
10v caps are only used to get slightly lower esr in a cheap part.

majority of mobo use 10V caps on the +5V VRM in

That was very common for using +5V rail VRM in during Ante- P4 & K8 time.
PSUs were also strong in +5V rail at that time.

            hkivan, your observation is correct.
And kc8adu has the correct reason why.

They don't use 10v for the voltage they use them for the lower ESR at the same uF.
            -
But ESR has more to do with can size than the rated voltage so sometimes their choices were silly.

              Recapped this today

Was a bit of squeeze getting the 12.5mm dia Pana FMs in!
Due care and attention required for the soldering.
It's a bit tricky - like my experience with Jetway 830 CF v3.0

              Thanks

could you post some pix of 12.5mm caps being put to 10mm placeholder?

                  Sorry...

Don't have a camera with sufficient quality (only a webcam).
Perhaps, instead use your imagination, it's not pretty!

every cap pointing to its own direction?

In actual fact, not quite as bad as that thx

If you refer to the pics in the former posts re - this mobo
The I/P side of the VRM has cap nearest to audio connector raised
above theTaigMag HA-003 transformer package for the LAN
and bound to its neighbour cap.
Upon reflection it might be better to dog leg this back toward
                      the AGP connector - dunno.
Those other two will fit no problem at 12.5mm.

Similar issue with the O/P side of the VRM.
The cap nearest the parallel port has had to be angled toward
                      the connector at 65-75 degrees.
The other four caps will fit no problem at 12.5mm.

Again, other forum members may suggest a CapXon 330uF 10mm dia would
have been a better selection in those positions where it ain't so
                      pretty.

Not really that bothered to be honest

it's bigger issue when you have 2 rows of caps(better to say columns, when mobo stands up)

                          Well...

To follow up so to speak.

After the recap, I powered up this mobo.
Much to my surprise a number of caps vented!

If I had double checked as I should have, I would have
noticed the postive terminal for a cap has a silk screen decal as
is used commonly for the negative terminal.

Net result. Replace all the caps on the mobo!
                          Valuable lesson learned.

Is this specific to Asus mobos?

Also the O/P VRM caps appear to be ok
I haven't tested these yet or in fact, taken them out.

                          Should I replace them?

                          Thanks for any advice

                            Does your motherboard POST?

ASUS motherboards can be quite confusing at first. What we think of "negative is marked by white" is the opposite on ASUS motherboards. You must of seen a good capacitor-popping show with smelly smoke.

Look at how the original capacitors are oriented in polarity before replacing them.

The mobo does POST (after the recap recap)
I am presently testing some memory in it.
Nothing appears to be damaged. Might have been lucky.

                              Thx
