    386 not recognizing ISA cards

    Hi everyone,

I have an old 386 pc that I had in my atic. This was my dad's first pc and the pc that I started playing video games.
I have cleand it, removed the old barrel battery, added a new battery (external battery) started up and everything works but it doesn't recognize the sound card or the network card.
The HDD controller and the Video card works on any ISA connector.
But the sound card ( Yanaha 718-S ) or the Network Card (3Com EtherLink III 3C509B ) doesn't work
I have tried this cards on 2 different pc's and they work. (on a Compaq prolinea 4/66 and a socket 7 motherboard)

I attaced a picture with the motherboard

    Any ideea?

    Thanks!

Try to swap the ISA cards to different slots , and make it one card at a time only . Don't insert the next card until the first is recognized . Many restarts could be required .

      welcome to the old world
cards need interupts and DMA channels,
not every slot supports every option,
and it's all set with jumpers - no plug & pray back then.
you also have to set some of that stuff in the bios now the battery is changed usually

you need at the least - a motherboard manual.
a soundcard manual is usefull but it probably uses standard settings like IRQ5
network card manual should be easy to find.
did you check the psu for burst or leaking caps?
or just to get the dust out.

        Thank you for your replys.

PSU was checked cleaned tested. As a matter of fact everything was cleaned and tested.
I have all the manuals and drivers but the MoBo. I can't find anything about it.
I have tried to swap the isa cards to different slots.
The PC works great, running Dos 6.22 and Win3.11 (NO mouse yet, I need an adapter and I was thinking at Necroware's adapter)

The bios is quite limited in options. Also couldn't find to much on the bios.

Yes Grinch23 . Sis Boards and AMI Bios were quite limited in options back then , It seems the system keep a log of the previous Interrupt request and Direct memory access , in conflict with the ones saved by the Bios . Best course of action now is waiting for the adapter ISA , to provide inputs for mouse , Floppy and CD Rom . A reinstall of a fresh Dos 6.22 will need a good floppy and the set of five or six floppy disks .
A fresh install would also clear the current conflict . By the way , there are no jumpers for IRQ or DMA onboard . I checked for that visually .
Of course , you have to stick the two ISA cards prior to format , and I suggest you put the Lan in the third slot and the Yamaha in the fifth , as these were the most common successful norm .
