How hard would this be to fix?

Have a Netgear 108mbps wireless PCI adapter with this cap. Would it hurt to run it like that or should I repair it first? Where can I get another cap?

That cap is definitely bad. When a cap gets pulled up like that, it tears the foils inside, which can cause it to arc inside or otherwise get very hot (a bad thing). Better get that cap replaced. You can get some caps off eBay, but if you live in the US you might be able to get the cap you need from a place like Radio Shack (or The Source in Canada.)

You could also try Digi-Key or Mouser.

BTW What brand of cap is it? You might be able to use a 120uf 16v or 120uf 25v cap in its place. (AFAIK you can safely use a higher voltage cap in its place, as long as its capacitance isn't drastically changed and it still fits.)

I'll probably be the only person going to SteamOS once it gets out of beta (ha ha.)

WTF is this? is this a mechanical failure due to rough handling or is thi cap blown? If it is working ok let it be, but i personally would fix it in a few minutes as it is a easy repair.

I have another cap off a old video card thats busted. It says 100uf and 16v. Same as the ones on the netgear. Of course it is a little shorter and a little fatter but should fit. Would this work?

Does brand of the cap matter?

BTW it was like that when it came in the mail. It looks like it got banged against something. I bought it for $30 used. I am working on a refund before I attempt to fix it. But just incase the guy won't give a refund I want to be ready to fix it.

Well, IMHO those cards are on 5v oe 3.3v, i assume that there are no vrm units. That said, this cap is only for stabilizing the 5v or 3,3v power grid, to make it more compatible with today`s crapy PSu & boards. Thats what i think. Furthermore it could be posible, that the cap is not hurt that hard, e.g. it could be in a working condition..... On the worst case, it is shorted. Then it would make the sytem powering of, or if crappy psu is there it will cause catastrophic failure he he he. Any way, with finger on the PSu`s off button i would not hesistate to try it. But as i have some caps laying around, proably i would not have to do that.

I am fairly good with a iron so replacing it is not a problem. My problem is I don't know much about caps. Like I said in my other reply I have a 100uf 16v on a dead video card I could take off if possible. Only difference is I think its a different brand and is a little shorter and fatter but not by much. Will this work?

Re: How hard would this be to fix?

Yes it could work but it could be damaged by the heat of desoldering and removing it.
Then using more heat for the reinstall.
If RS has your cap it would only cost a couple bucks.
Read about cap installation on our home page, it's linked on the left

                  whats RS??

Anyway how hot does a 15watt sodering iron get? Any ideas? I just use it to mod xboxs mostly.

ERm ok it is not a motherboard, but any way it could be hard with 15w iron on a multilayer pcb. But ok try it. RS= RS components a major elektronic component distributor. If you update your profile with your location, we can make further suggestions where to obtain caps in your area.

I have to corect my above said. There is an linear voltage regulator, thus it would not necesarily mean that there it *have to be* an ultra low esr cap. Probably any generic ones would work there. But again i would suggest some Panasonic FC or FM or anything from Rubycon. But for an temporal repair i think a general purpose high temp typ will do it. May be for ever.

gonzo, I think he is in the USA.

                        RS=Radio Shack. Use a 40~60W iron.

thx for the replies. What should I do take the cap off and take it to RS and let them look at it to see if they have them?

                            by federalhouse
                            Hi everyone,

I'm in need of assistance with a Dell Precision 5820 Tower. The BIOS is locked with "Dell Security Manager," preventing access to the HDD-1 hard drive.

                            **Background:**

I recently purchased this Dell Precision 5820 Tower from a recycler who salvages equipment from abandoned office spaces. The computer was left behind by its previous owner and was password locked. Given that it can run Windows 11, I saw this as an opportunity to upgrade my setup.

Sony OLED XR-77A80J - 5 Flashes But Turn On After Hard Reset
                            by odie34
I am a hobbyist (not a professional) so please be gentle...

I recently received an XR-77A80J that wouldn't turn on. (Repeating 5 flashes when plugged in.)

I did a hard reset by holding the power button for about 30 seconds until the set powered down. I then tried to turn it on and it powered up, bringing me to the setup screen. There's not a lot of detail on the setup screen but the picture didn't have any distortions, so at least a cursory examination suggests no physical damage to the screen. The set appeared to be working normally, but it shut down after about 15 seconds,...

PC case - Hard drive rails
                            by tmcw
A friend gave me his old PC case (with MB, and PSU), but no hard drive rails, he said he only used the 2.5" SSD spot inside, and used an external hard drive for data. He said that he'd have a look for the supplied rails, but I doubt he'll find them.

So I was wondering if case manufacturers used any type of standard 3.5" hard drive rail?

I'm used to the various Dell hard drive caddies or rails (and HP and Lenovo to a lesser extent), or el cheapo cases where you screw through the frame to fix the drive.

Now, the case is a CiT Gaming Case, and...
