    ASUS P5LD2 Recap Success Story

I've just successfully recapped my ASUS P5LD2. The system was having occasional crashes (once or twice a day), RAM had to be throttled back, on board SATA was flaky, Vcore was fluctuating all over the place, and the CPU ran quite hot (~45C idle and >70C when running Prime95). Several of the caps had started swelling and or oozing out of the top, but none had yet popped.

After looking over the board, I ordered the following caps from badcaps.net:

    5 1000uF 16v 8mm HN Series
    5 1500uF 10v 8mm HZ Series
    17 820uF 6.3v 8mm HN Series

The board also had several 470uF 6.3v caps, and a bunch of even smaller ones, but they were all fine.

Once I had the board out of the machine, and the CPU heatsink removed, I discovered there were more seven more puffed caps underneath. These were 680uF, 4V, and only 8mm high. Since I couldn't find equivalent caps from badcaps.net, and since I was now in a hurry (being without a computer), I ordered them from DigiKey instead: #493-4022-1-ND, 680UF 6.3V.

The replacement went well, and the machine booted up fine (after I remembered to put the RAM back in ).

The RAM is now running at full speed again, Vcore is rock steady at 1.35V when the CPU is working hard, and the CPU idles at 38C and maxes out at about 52C. I'm going to keep using the SATA card for a week or so, and will try switching back to the on-board SATA after that, carefully monitoring the event log for issues.
