    Sceptre X20G-NagaIII Monitor Not working

    Hi,

I have a Sceptre X20G monitor and it is not working. I am trying to fix it. I have used this site in the past to help fix things but most of the time i have an idea as to what is causing the problem. This time .......i am clueless.

    Symptom:
I power on monitor....tpower on LEDs come on and they are showing "red" in color.....so something is wrong. The Sceptre logo appears on the screen. The logo disappears....screen kinda flickers a bit then this dialog box comes up which i think is trying to indicate there is no connection between computer and monitor.

    What i have done:
1-I tested each of the 6 bulbs to see if they work. Now the way i did this was to use an existing / working monitor. I soldered leads/wires onto the "good" monitor from the inverter board. I use these wires to power on the bulbs from the "suspect" monitor. One of the bulbs seems to be bad.
2- So to see if the bulb is the only problem with the suspect monitor what i did next was.....connect a good bulb (instead of the bad bulb) from a known good monitor to the suspect monitor. No change.....i astill get the red led lights.
3-I meaured using an esr meter the big filter caps........at first i measured an esr of 45 or 52....but this was wrong. I did not see the "decimal place". So i think i measured 0.45 and 0.52. However, i dont think i zeroed out the meter (its one of those blue esr meters.......kinda nice but never used one before). I desoldered the big caps and measured there cap values. They are 68uF/250V caps. I measured 60.5uf and 62.7uf.........so slightly less than the 68uF that is on the label. I remeasured the esr zeroing out the this time and i measured 1.1 and 0.9 for esr values. Seems reasonable.
4-I resoldered the big caps back into circuit and powered on monitor. I measured the DC voltage across the big filter caps and measured ~ 163V DC. Is this right?
5-I measured the ESR values for all the caps on the board.........they seem ok. I dont recall all the values measured but they were all less than 1......actually most i think were around 0.1 to 0.15.

I am not sure what the problem is.............the bulb is bad i think but i think there is something else that is also bad. Because when i put a good bulb in (as described above) the problem is still there.........so it has to be something in-addition to just the bulb.

    Any advice is welcomed!

Any advice on what voltages i could measure to help identify the problem would be great! I really think this monitor can be fixed....just not sure where the problem is.

Forgot in the previous message to post pictures of the back of the boards as well.

So these pics which i am enclosing are for the "backs" of the boards.

Did you put that wire in or has someone been there before? Are the wires with dark flux around them the ones you de-soldered to test the bulbs?

Are you talking about the grey wire on the back of the video board? If so i did not put this there.........and i dont know if someone has been there before me.

Engineering error fix for batch of PCBs. Next batch of PCB get revised.

Anyone have any ideas for "test points" to determine where / what may be wrong with this? I could really use some help.

Re: Sceptre X20G-NagaIII Monitor Not working

The large filter caps..........they have slightly less capacitance than the 68uF.....does anyone think this is a problem? I powered on monitor and measured voltage across caps and it was 163V DC. Does this sound ok?

Again, any ideas on what i should measure would be appreciated

Re: Sceptre X20G-NagaIII Monitor Not working

This looks close to the same power supply used in Gateway FPD2185W screens. Is it a Samsung LCD? I heard that most of the gateway screens died in under 3 years of use... mostly due to bad caps. I would try replacing all but the two large caps as a start. I also noticed that they sell inverter transistor kits for the FPD2185W. There are 4 of them on the under side of the board. On the gateway I think its U301, U302, U304, and U305.

Here is a thread for the Gateway FPD2185W

Re: Sceptre X20G-NagaIII Monitor Not working

Did you have any luck with this one? This is the same power supply as the FPD2185W. If you are changing U301, U302, U304, and U305 the numbers on them are qty 2 each of AOD405 (replaced by AOD417) and AOD408 (replaced by AOD484). I know that Digikey carries them but I didn't check inventory.

There shouldn't be any issue with those big caps but it looks like something may be going on at F101 which is your primary fuse. Check the resistance to see if it is open. I would also suggest re-flowing the solder joints of the large transformers while you are in there.
