"I'd need to blow away quite a bit of the circuitry or at least figure out where to cut the PCB to disable the CCFL driver, but need to make sure the rest of the monitor is still working before I proceed further."

Where are the good clear pictures of your board top and bottom side?

to disable the cfl driver just pull the lamp controller ic or the fets.

      i have a 19"tv with 6 tubes - 3top and 3bottom.
it's not unusual on older sets during the "brightness wars" as i call them.

Nice...well now the dilemma of choosing

        1. Fix the CCFL driver, no idea what else fried when the magic smoke came out... The annoying thing is either I have to somehow make extensions for the wires to the CCFL bulbs else I can't probe the circuit with it powered on as all of the interesting stuff is tucked away on the hidden copper side, and surface mounted...

        2. buy THREE sets of 2 LED strips (~420mm)... not sure if it's worth it for this old monitor or not quite yet.

          3. extract the metal rails with the tubes on them from the side of the panel
