Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
I know this is an old thread, but could someone recommend quality caps for this repair? I have had good luck repairing my Pioneer Elite, and want to try my monitor. We have a Mouser nearby.
Thanks!Leave a comment:

Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
Hey. we usually like a "real" challenge.
It still looks a bit messy - take the old cap out and remove as much solder as you can then with an old toothbrush or similar brush the are with some isopropyl alcohol, then post another picture. If you get a new cap it looks like the legs will be long enough to reach the next joint. If you want to use the old one then straighten the legs and put it back in securing it to the board with the good leg. Tin the bad leg. Get a wire and make a loop in it to fit over the leg and long enough to reach the next joint. Solder the loop to the leg, slide on a piece of insulation if required then solder the other end of the wire to the next joint.
I think you should be aiming for something like the attached.Leave a comment:

Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
You have 2 options before getting another power supply.
1)You can solder a wire from the caps leg to the point you were trying to strech the leg to.
2)Take a razor blade, small screwdriver, something sharp and very delicately scape the trace to expose the copper and make a pad and solder to that.Leave a comment:

Oh, man. You guys don't want to see this haha. I surrendered and just started gobbing solder trying to get it to stick to the board. No luck. I sucked it all off for the picture. It's toasted.
EDIT: Also, I had tried to stretch the cap lead to the next point as you can see.Leave a comment:

Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
However, the 2.2uf capacitor (green in the picture) is loose from the board. The board is actually split in that area from trying to remove the old cap from the silicone/paste (whatever it is). I am not sure if this is even repairable at this point without just buying a new power supply.

Update: I think I found the problem. I regretfully do not own a multimeter so I can't get you those readings, retiredcaps. However, the 2.2uf capacitor (green in the picture) is loose from the board. Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
1) IC802, IC601, and IC702 are voltage regulators on the main board.
2) When the lcd is working, measure all 3 regulators. If you can't get all measured with 30 seconds, keep powering on/off until you do.
3) Set your multimeter (if manual range) to 20V DC.
4) Put your black probe on a ground screw. Leave it there the entire time. This is your ground.
5) Put your red probe on each of the pins including the "cut" pin, but ignore the "fat" tab. The fat tab is "up" or "north". Number the pins left to right.
6) You should have 3 readings per regulator (5 for IC702)
7) Report them like so along with the part number (include all lines on the IC) of the IC.
IC802
1084-33
pin 1 = 0.0
pin 2 = 3.3
pin 3 = 5.0
8) Repeat the above measurements when the lcd is NOT working (i.e. no power LED on). Report your measurements.Leave a comment:

Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
Take it apart, leave it apart. Power on and see if it goes off after 30 seconds. If yes, get your multimeter out and there is voltage on the main board (still waiting pictures of all your boards in my preferred format as in post #3 - I don't ask a 3rd time ever).Leave a comment:

Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
Correct. The monitor now comes on for about 30 seconds and then shuts off completely and won't turn back on. It seems to turn on only the first time after reassembly, like it's resetting somehow when I take it apart. This has happened twice. I have not powered on the monitor without being fully reassembled. I've completely put it back together every time before connecting power to it. The backlight shines brightly for the time it stays lit and the picture looks great. I will make sure none of the components are touching the metal housing, but I don't think they are as they are the same height as the previous ones. I will inspect the on/off cable when I get home. I doubt there is any image being displayed, even faintly since the power light isn't on after shutting down. I will check that as well though just to make sure.
The 17" Dell LCD works. It's just very old and has nonadjustable, crappy backlighting.Leave a comment:

Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
It may depend on the problem. Often if it it is the backlight or its transformer that is the problem then the power led does stay on and sometimes a faint image can still be seen on screen. Shining a flashlight on it sometimes helps to see the image.
Any working ccfl will do - is the 17dell working - I am only thinking ahead and asking what you have available in case it can help. For example If the 17dell is working it may be enough to power up the ccfls in the 216 and if they stayed lit it would illiminate them as a problem.
Just re read your opening post and your saying it shuts off totally? I dont think I have come across that before. Especially having to dismantle it to get it back on.
Are you putting it all back in the case to try it?
Two things to check - is it possible to set it up in pieces eveything connected but not in the case . boards can be kept apart using sheets of cardboard. I am wondering if one of the legs on a new cap is a bit long and is touching the frame.
Second is the on off switch on a cable and is it being trapped or has it become damaged?Leave a comment:

Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
Oh, sorry. I do not have a spare ccfl close to the size of this one that I can use. I've got an old 17" Dell LCD...
If it was the ccfl, wouldn't the power still stay on to the monitor when it goes dark?Last edited by Downward_Spiral; 07-18-2012, 07:33 AM.Leave a comment:

Re: Samsung 216BW SyncMaster Monitor. Cap replacement didn't fix
Joint doesnt look as bad in this pic - but you should check all the factory joints.
You didnt say regarding the spare ccfls/monitor
I would still like a single picture of the top of the board and the bottom in the same
orientation I can get a feel for the layout.Leave a comment:

by momakaNormally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow.
But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though.
I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

by ant3202Hi Everyone
Lately I am experiencing the deja-vu incident on one of the led monitor like this.

The monitor is HP 27es LED Monitor

The monitor will randomly blackout and display no signal and will recover again.
Sometimes need to power and off again to restore the display but...-

by Rick_1234Good evening, gentlemen.
I have a problem with my monitor. It turns off after a few seconds or flickers. Shining a flashlight on the screen doesn't show any image, so I guess it's not the "2 seconds to dark" I read in the forum.
To turn it back on, I have to press the power button twice. Then after a few seconds it turns off again or flickers. See video.

by black6hostGood day!
I have a Samson Resolv studio monitor that has no sound output. I've opened it up and found two caps that are bulging on what I believe to be the power supply section of the amplifier board. The board is marked Resolv 65A AMP V1.2. The caps in question are YUSCON, 2200uF, 35V, 85C temp and have markings of RA(P) and are 16mm x 25.5mm tall. I've attached the schematic and the caps in question are C5 and C6. I'm assuming they are low esr caps. I've tested both caps and they test low uF, nowhere near 2200uF.
I'm going to replace the caps and I'll be the first...-

by momakaLooking through my repair pictures and notes, it's been a long time since I posted anything in the LCD monitors section. So here goes that.
I'm dedicating this thread to one of the very first LCD monitors I repaired (if not the first one), which was more than 10 years ago now. The monitor is a Wise Wing, model F199. It's a 19” CFL-backlit LCD. I got it for free off of Craigslist in 2009 from a guy, who said he bought it for cheap from Wallmart and the monitor worked only for a little less than 2 years before quitting.
When I saw the Craigslist post, I wasn't...-
