20" WestingHOuse LCD Flickering after 5hrs.

First off I would like to say hello to everyone, and say thank you for all of the knowledge you have put on this website!

I am a PC tech of nearly 13 years, and have a 9 year background in aircraft avionics, to include PCB repair. With that said I own a Weller soldering iron that i am very proficient in using, a Fluke multimeter, and a farad meter. I am also in the process of turning one of my bench PC's into a "O" scope.

My LCD monitor knowledge sucks and i am in the process of re-learning basic Electronics Principals again, and learning how LCD's work.

I have recently received a 20" Westinghouse LCD monitor from a friend that turns off on its own after about 3hrs. I opened it up and found 4 bad caps on the power side of a power/inverter board combo. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem it was having. Now the problem is a little different. Before it would just shut off, and had to be unplugged for some time before it would turn back on. Now, it starts to flicker on and off after about 5hrs or so.

I got my hands on the LCD Monitor Repair book by Jestine Yong, and have been reading through it trying to get a grasp on the problem, but have not been able to find it.

If anyone could shed some light on the situation and give me some pointers or some things to look for i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much for helping!!!!

Hi there, and welcome. You say 4 bad caps, visibly bad, or measured bad.
We usually find that where there's a few bad caps, there are often more.
They went bad because they were crap caps, or due to heat/stress.

    I always re-cap the entire powersupply/inverter when I repair a monitor.

That said, how are the power supply output voltages?

Also, when you say it flickers on and off, jsut the backlights, or does the power light go on/off too?
36 Monitors, 3 TVs, 4 Laptops, 1 motherboard, 1 Printer, 1 iMac, 2 hard drive docks and one IP Phone repaired so far....

I actually do the same when i recap a board, meaning i replaced all the caps on the board not just the ones that were "physically" bad. The above response was from what the customer told me when i gave the monitor back to him, ill have to update my post when i actually get the monitor back into my shop. From what he said though it sounds like the monitor is turning off then back on. i will check the voltages on the PS when i get it back, specifically on the bridge rectifier, filter cap, and VCC on the power IC. if there is anywhere else i should check please let me know. thanks for the reply!

Once you crack it open again, post some photos. We might recognize the design and point out some common issues.

Definitely examine the solder side carefully, bad solder joints can cause some odd issues.

What brand and series did you use for the replacements?

Samxon GF series are problematic so hopefully you didn't use them.

ACER BM320 Monitor - Horizonal Flickering Lines After a While
                    by reessi
                    Hello,

The monitor started off showing flickering thin (1 pixel) lines horizontally every say 3mm..

They are black on the right and gradually fade to nothing on the far left.
They start either after 5 mins or up to 2 hours after so annoying for testing.
They flicker continuously very fast! With a slight pause milli-second every second.

Initially I cleaned the LVDS cable and connected to the T-Con and then it worked fine for 3 weeks but not sure if this was just co-incidence.

I tested each half by removing the first the left flex from...

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Westinghouse L2210NW LCD monitor - bad caps repair
                    by momaka
Here's another LCD monitor repair: Westinghouse L2210NW.
Quick specs: 22” CCFL backlit LCD, 1680x1050 max resolution (16:10 aspect ratio)

I got it with a bunch of desktops PCs from a repair shop that was trying to free up space a few years ago. It seemed like a cheap monitor, so I didn't really care that much at first when I picked it up (and indeed it is, picture-wise.) But hey, free is free, so I can't complain. Moreover, it looked clean and the screen didn't have any significant scratches or blemishes.

Pictures of the monitor outside/case after a brief...

The monitor will randomly blackout and display no signal and will recover again.
Sometimes need to power and off again to restore the display but...
