    Proview pl713s -newbie in distress

Hi guys! Glad to have found such a wide community of experts online. I have a couple questions.

The monitor is a Proview pl713s. Its old and I don't really intend to use it but thought it would be fun to fix. Its completely dead, no screen, no power light. I can see bad caps on the board. I also see parts of the board that are discolored near the yellow boxes I believe are called fets.

My question is how do I order the capacitors needed? Digikey seems really complicated and I don't know how to order caps. Badcaps unfortunately doesnt have the caps I need. Do I need low ESR caps and if so how low?

My other sort of unrelated question is what books did you guys read to learn about this stuff? I want to start repairing monitors, t.v.'s and PCs for ppl who have bad caps.

    It has
    2x 150uF 25v
    1x 47uF 25v
    2x 470uF 25v
    4x 1000uF 25v
    1x 220uF 25v

    Hi and welcome aboard.
Ordering caps is really pretty easy on Digikey you just need to narrow down the search.

I usually search on panasonic capacitors, then narrow it to aluminum.
Once I get that screen, I select in stock, FM or FC series, then select the capacitance and voltage.

As for your monitor, the yellow things are the inverter transformers. Check the soldering on them, sometimes bad solder joints will cause problems. Caps will probably bring your monitor back to life. Also, you will want to post photos of the bottom of the board, there are often some surface mount transistors, diodes etc there as well.

Of the 10 or so monitors I've done this year, 7 were only caps, 2 were a combination of caps/bad solder and bad transistors.
As far as learning, if you were to read a few threads on here, particularly when PlainBill explains in detail about troubleshooting.

Welcome! There is a thread in the Frequently Asked Questions that gives information on what caps to buy. If you are in the U.S., Digikey is probably your best bet. It's generally safe to order Panasonic FC or FM series. The info missing from your list would be diameter and height of the space the cap needs to fit into. Using all of those parameters will allow you to narrow down the search on Digikey's site.

As for learning, start on page 1 of the forum posts and work your way forward. Ask lots of questions, there are tons of friendly folks here that can and will educate you.

Edit: P.S. Check the main input fuse next to the AC connector! If it's blown, you'll want to do more testing on things like the bridge rectifier and inverter transistors.

Welcome to the forum! Nice photo. Try this method for ordering caps from Digikey:

        1) Go to digikey.com

        2) In the "parts search" window type: panasonic fm and select "GO" button

        3) Under the Capacitor heading select "Aluminum"

        4) The first two columns you see are capacitance and voltage. Highlight the value and voltage with your mouse and select the "Apply Filters" button

        5) You'll see several selections available. Here's what to look for:

        a) Look at the quantity available and minimum purchase. If "0" are available, then there's none to purchase. Some selections require a minumum purchase of a 1000 units, which you also don't want. I think you get the picture.

        b) height and diameter. Measure the original caps and compare to what's listed.

        6) If your value is out of stock, go back to the beginning and type in "panasonic fc" and go through the same process.

        7) During the checkout process select USPS First Class shipping, since this will give the best ship rate.

As for the discoloration: if you look underneath the board opposite the side of the discoloration, you'll probably find the MOSFETs you mentioned. They DO run hot, but like smason says, replace the caps first. If it doesn't solve your problem, then go ahead and post a photo of the bottom of the same board.

I started with Electronics for Dummies to get the basics.

One valuable troubleshooting book I have been reading over the last 3 months is "Troubleshooting and Repairing Consumer Electronics without a schematic" by Homer Davidson.

It has nothing about LCDs, but it talks about SMPS and other things that are relevant to what you are asking about above.

Hi guys I know this thread is kinda old but i found some time to continue this project.

So I looked on digikey and the dont have any panasonic fm/fc 150uf @ 25v caps. What do I do?

Also should I replace the big cap? And what about the tiny caps on the 2nd board of this monitor?

Unless the large cap is swollen or leaking, you normally don't have to replace it.

You can also use the Nichicon PW series cap for the 150uf, part # 493-1822-ND, also available at digikey.

Thanks got all the caps I need. So excited. (:

So how do you know which caps are motherboard grade? Can you give me a list of brands with the series (such as Panasonic FC) so next time I need caps I can just go down the list?

I always remind everybody that the order of caps on that list is misleading. Contrary to real life, the quality improves as you go from left to right.

Guys I did it but there were sparks and smoke! I saw the LCD turn on and then I saw sparks where the power button is and then smoke from the MB. The LCD never shutdown and was still on so I unplugged it.

I looked over my work and found on questionable joint. This joint was kinda mixed into the neighboring solder so I sucked out the solder. I think the solder that I took was used as a wire on the MB and I took too much out. You can see a white line where the solder used to be. Take a look at the pic.

I turned it on again and the smoke comes from all the joints on the bottom of the board. Any ideas?

U101 says this on the SMD 4606 BD46DK

                                What do I do next?

I see some questionable solder joints on the inverter transformer secondary side, on the right transformer in the first picture.
Unfortunately it looks like U101 is damaged.

To the left of the bad U101 mosfet is just a dab of burnt flux. So where do I get the replacement part for the U101?
