    Ideal caps for crossover?

HI, Ive got a speaker hear that sounds different than the other identicle speakers. It sounds muddy in comparison. Had a look all all tweeters and drivers seem to be functioning fine, so thinking maybe the crossover.

There is residue all over the board which I assumed was electrolytic from one of the caps. Have removed and tested them all and all are testing ok but cant think of anything else and wouldn't be the first time a cap tested ok but wasn't so might aswell just change them as there are only 5 of them.

Speaker is a Jamo L7 Sur

    Caps are all NP caps

    3 x M.D.L. 6.8uf 50v NP
    1 x M.D.L. 10uf 50v NP
    1 x M.D.L. 72uf 50v NP

Not really sure what to replace with?

Why not swap the crossover with the one in the working speaker to see if is indeed the problem.

good crossovers generally use plastic caps, not electrolytics

I had the same thing with my Sansui's. Old capacitors sounded muddy and smeared. I replaced them with Solen from here http://www.parts-express.com/cat/met...capacitors/294 .

Bit too much work, although I could dip over driver easily and test

Any idea what the ones in mine are? Anyway I can check

          Was looking at these caps

Do yourself a favor and go with polypropylene. Jantzen, Solen should be available since they're made in Europe. This would be good for the 6.8 uF. http://www.parts-express.com/jantzen...citor--027-928 . This would replace the 72 uF. http://www.parts-express.com/cat/met...28%29%2Frecord[endeca%3Amatches%28.%2C%22P_PortalID%22%2C%221%22%29+and+endeca%3Amatches%28.%2C%22P_Searchable%22%2C%221%22%29]&PortalID=1&showMoreIds=21640 . Try to find them at Farnell or something.

                NP = non-polarised electrolytic
junk, but MUCH cheaper than film caps

Yea the films caps are a bit too pricy for value of speaker. Ive gone for some jentzen non polarized electrolytic caps. See how it goes.

You are right, perhaps I should have said suitable caps. These are to go into speakers that i'm going to sell, not keep, so not worth sinking £20+ in caps for when the speaker itself is worth that much.

Your recommendation isn't wasted however as I need to sort some of my own aging speakers shortly and will use those your recommended!

Images of the caps looked to be the same ones as the ones that need replacing, so maybe a better match. Are jentzen the same company as mdl?

You can see from the price why manufacturers use electrolytics except in high end speakers. The Pioneer HPM 100 used poly film from the factory. I've rebuilt three pairs for personal use and replaced the original with modern replacements.

I first started with my Sansui SP-L700. I was using 2 pair and recapped one pair. I then put the receiver to mono and sat in front of all four. The recapped speakers sounded so much clearer, the instruments could be picked out individually. The original speakers were terrible in comparison. I immediately took the other two out and recapped them with film. I've done it to every speaker since, even a Pioneer set from 1990 that didn't impress me much. I gave them to a friend.

I agree with this, and I have also recommend replacing bipolar electrolytic capacitors with plastic units for Horizontal deflection in 12V (sometimes 24V as well) TV sets.
Another project I am working on (a boombox TV) involves replacing certain electrolytic capacitors for reliability, including the tweeter coupling capacitors being changed from bipolar electrolytic to plastic units.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

                                          Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                                          Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Help with switching power supply caps
                                          by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...

Polk csi40 center ch speaker crossover caps replacement
                                          by budwich
Did a "gross" impedance measurement of the inputs on my polk csi40 center channel speaker. It showed about 4ohms. Seemed kind of low. There are two midrange drivers and one twitter ... 2 way system.
All measurements at the drivers seem ok in the 4 - 6 ohm range (the two mid range are in series).

Anyway, in the crossover on the tweeter side, there are two caps in parallel basically leaving an inductor .... "nice simple setup", especially when no schematics around. The question is finding a replacement. One is a TI .47uf met 100vdc while other is a 9.1uf...
