Harman Kardon HK 3490 Completely Dead, No Standby

    Hello,

I've got a Harman Kardon HK 3490 Stereo Integrated Amplifier and it won't turn on. It's completely dead. With the unit plugged in and the main power switch on the back of the unit turned on, even the amber standby LED won't illuminate. No buzzing, humming or any clicking noises from relays.

The main power switch tests good and mains voltage is getting to the board. From there I'm not sure... Both fuses in the unit test fine.

Would the main power transformer be suspect? What feeds the amber/blue power LED on the front of the unit?

I have the Service Manual for the unit attached. Any ideas where to look next?

    Thanks!

    Nick

Page 106, lower-right: small board with power/stand-by LEDs and the power button.

I'd start checking the outputs of the transformer's board, and after that, the voltages that come after the regulators on each board (to which wires from the transformer board go - page 106, bottom middle-right)

Thanks, I'll give it a try tonight and see what I come up with.

Re: Harman Kardon HK 3490 Completely Dead, No Standby

I'm getting 0V at both the input and output of the 5V regulator.

I've got 117V at the primary side of the standby transformer, but 0V on the secondary side. I removed the transformer and checked the resistance of each side. About 5 ohms of resistance on the secondary side, open on the primary.

I've ordered a couple replacement standby transformers. We'll see if that's the issue.

        Thanks,
        Nick

Harman Kardon AVR 171S - standby led lights up, does not turn on
          by madsox
          Greetings!

Thank you in advance for your understanding, I am writing to you through a translator.

A Harman Kardon AVR171S amplifier was given.

The history of the machine is as follows:
It was faulty when I bought it, I want to fix it.
I replaced the HDMI switch and one of the DAC ICs in it.
After that it worked without a problem.

I watched a movie using the amplifier, and at the end the amplifier got really hot.
The cooling was faulty, I will fix this later.
I switched it to standby mode, waited for...

Harman Kardon AVR-355 going into standby
          by unilogic
My AVR-355 switches itself to standby mode after a few minutes, when it becomes warm. If I turn it back on, it doesn't shut off anymore and can run for hours. If I let it cool down for a few hours and then turn it on again, it shuts off again after a few minutes. But no more problems if I turn it back on immediately. This always happens, even if the device is not connected to anything. I don't see a "protect" message or anything special. The device simply goes to standby (amber power button)
I did a complete reset of the CPU, but the problem persists...
          I have attached...

          Would I be able to swap a 0.27 Ohm Kx2 5W resistor for a 0.22 Ohm Jx2 5W resistor in a Harman/Kardon AVR? Cement type.
