    1820m cap replacement

Hey everyone, I have an 1820m and I really want to get rid of a lot of these pesky cheap caps that cause problems. There is a bit of information and an electrical engineer who has posted some tips for replacing caps on this other forum http://www.productionforums.com/view...p=79951#p79951 (this one has a parts list) http://www.productionforums.com/view...10846&start=45 (classd has some interesting input on what to get) I took a bunch of pictures, some of them are too blurry but these should help http://imgur.com/a/pFfFc ok so, I would really appreciate some ideas for caps I should get/improvements that could be made, my dad and I are going to work on this box and get it in order.

    Re: 1820m cap replacement

So I don't have to read the whole linked topic, these caps are in the power subcircuits not audio path coupling caps, correct? If so, I'd just get replacements of the appropriate ratings, diameter and lead pitch to match the available space, something like Panasonic FM series from Digikey.

The following link should take you to their selection boxes to pick the specs:
    http://search.digikey.com/us/en/cat/...c%20FM&stock=1

If the order stays under 8 oz weight you can use the cheaper USPS shipping option. In other words if the order is over 8 oz but under 16 oz, it can be cheaper shipping to split it up into two orders. Either way shipping takes about the same time (+/- 1 day).

Take some of the tips "classd" wrote in the topic with a grain of salt, the ideas about solder, soldering, and desoldering issues aren't necessarily true without some other problem which is really unrelated. The right technique with any tool counts and will work or the tools (and solder, etc) wouldn't exist. Replacing only a few caps could be done even with century old tools and solder.

As for other improvements, what did you have in mind? The sky is the limit on something like this, every other year some chip or other component comes along with slightly better specs. Some would be drop in replacements (solder in) and others might need separate daughter boards to adapt them.

For example there's the power regulator ICs, swapping in something with lower noise specs is a theoretical improvement - though you may not hear any audible difference. It seems to have a row of opamps at the analog outputs, swapping those might also help and is more likely to make a small audible difference. Is that difference an improvement? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. There's dozens of tiny electrolytic caps around what I assumed above were the opamps and the DAC chips, all of those could be replaced with higher spec electrolytics or if the circuit requirements don't need a high uF capacitance value, perhaps polymer or film capacitors instead of electrolytic. The cost and time for this will keep rising.

Overall I'm inclined to suggest that you leave the design as-is except replacing some of the electrolytic caps already known to be potentially problematic.

Macbook Air M2 A2681 Kernel panics after screen replacement
        by reformatt
Just had a customer bring in a M2 MBA A2681 that had had a screen replacement in April at another repairer. Since then, she has been getting intermittent kernel panics. It's an aftermarket screen, and of course it fails in diagnostics as the calibration hasn't been done. The error in the panic log is "No device added after powering on the rails".

It seems the original repairer has swapped the board and the screen to other MAC's, and said that it isn't a screen issue. From what I understand, by doing a quick search on Google, this is in fact a screen issue. The panic relates...

Unknown transformer : how to find a good replacement part ?
        by the_rem
        Hello guys,

I would like a quite old but still good 800 W ATX PSU to be repaired. The problem was an extremely heavy coil whine coming from the small secondary transfomer on the PCB.

I desoldered it hoping the references on the upper side would allow me to find a adequate replacement part. Sadly the written references drove me nowhere but to the manufacturer (I-MAG). I sent them a message like a bottle in the see asking them to send me a datasheet of the transformer. And... They responded ! I received a kind of datasheet (see attachment) but my competencies do not allow...

PS4 controller left stick potentiometer replacement issue
        by ezenia
        Hello,

Not sure if this is the correct section, but I have a PS4 controller that I am trying to fix. It developed stick drift on the left stick and the usual simpler methods did not fix the problem.

So I went on eBay and ordered some replacement potentiometers. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174967976757 is where I got them from.

I took the green potentiometers off the replacement sticks and soldered them onto the PCB. Assembled the controller and ran some tests. The drifting was somewhat fixed (not fully in center, but way better than before). However,...

Macbook pro logic board replacement parts quesion
        by boosti45
i have a 2020 macbook pro 13" A2251 with 820-09149 logic board so i found an issue with chip labeled U6903 according to schem. boardview using flexBV software, so i removed it from the board and the issue im having is that the chip says "07A08FI ELC180" on top of it but when searching for a replacement chip, i can find tons of identical looking chips that also have "ELC180" printed on them but the first set of digits is never the same so im trying to find out if i need this exact chip with these same numbers as mine and if not which ones are compatible as a replacement?...

klipsch kda-500 amplifier suitable power supply capacitor replacement ?
        by r2digital
I have a klipsch kda-500 that would turn on and allow me to get into the web management but it was picking up a lot of noise from audio sources so i decided to replace the smd caps on the power supply along with radial one. Some one was in here before me and they basically burned the bottom side of the traces off for the radial cap but i was able to repair it without any real problem. I thought i did a good job sourcing out replacement caps but apparently not and now i can't get the power supply to turn on it just constantly try's to keep turning on. Attached is a picture of the power supply before...
