Re: Heat pump tumble dryer regas

    Thanks again.

As soon as I get some equipment I shall update.
Looking to obtain gauges, hoses, vacuum pump, refrigerant leak detector, vacuum gauge and k-type thermometer.

Question - is it possible to refill refrigerant from another system rather than from a cylinder or can?

I highly recommend that you do NOT do this type of procedure because you do not know if this system is contaminated ( with acid or something else like non condensable ) or not and if it is it just contaminates your system and you would have a lot more work to clean the system after that happens

It was more of a theoretical question rather than practical.

Assuming the donor refrigerant and system are ok would the process be the same?

Assuming that the Freon is NOT contaminated by anything you could recover the Freon with a Freon recovery tank and a lot of ice in a bucket and you could recover most of the Freon

But this is crap shoot to do this with out testing it for acid at a minimum also if you have a Freon recovery tank you should only use the liquid side of the tank not the gas side just in case there is non condensable in the Freon tank from the system that you are taking the Freon out of when you get ready for adding more Freon to the system that you are repairing let me know and I will try to explain to you how to charge a system with liquid Freon this not recommended procedure by the way and if done wrong you can damage the compressor

If you want to minimize the amount of contamination from using Freon from another system then get your self a central air conditioner filter dryer ( you could use two of them in series for more filtering if you want be more sure that you get as much as possible of any contamination in the Freon ) that is for a 5 ton unit and use the valve that I recommend that you should buy put one on each end of the filter dryer in front of the service hose going to the gauge to the system that you are repairing

You do have to prepare the recovery tank by vacuuming it out until you have 29 inch of vacuum and once you have reached this valve keep the vacuum pump for another 30 minutes and with valves on the Freon recovery tank closed watch the gauges for 15 minutes to see if it’s value changes then you might still mosture in the tank run the vacuum pump for another half hour until you do not see any changes in the value of the gauge reading

Once you have completed this procedure then put the recovery tank in a bucket full of ice and let the tank get very cold before you open the valves on your garage and if you can heat up the compressor on the doner system and leave it in status for at least an hour so you will recover most of Freon out of the donor system

You need to make sure that you purge the gauges service line before you start add or putting Freon in the tank or to system that you are repairing

Then you would charge the system that you are trying to repair you do not want your system suction side pressure to be lower than ( 40*F or 35 psi or slightly higher value would be fine as well ) so you do not have an evaporator freezing issue

One note if you do not follow the procedures to not contaminate the system systems you are asking for trouble down the road and may even shorten the life of the compressor and contaminate the system as well and at worst you would not be able to get the system pressure to be correct and changed it still will not work correctly

This is assuming that it just low on Freon now if it is a compressor issue or a cap tube restriction then you will have a lot more work to do but some of the procedures are the same for recovery of the Freon out of the system

I still would highly recommend that you use new Freon out of cans that are for automotive air conditioning systems just make sure that it does NOT have oil add for compressor the reason that most Freon for automotive air conditioning is because when you have a leak in the system because the compressor has so little oil in them and you have a Freon leak you would lose some oil but the amount of oil that is in these cans is too much oil in most cases and if you have to much oil in a system then you can some serious issues to possibility of compressor failure or very low cooling efficiency at a minimum

I hope this helps you with this repair
