Re: Suitable replacment for this big fella?

Noise from the motor itself isn't good. I bet you have a weak spot in the windings' insulation and it's going to ground. Unless it's 10 hp or higher, it's not worth having the windings replaced. 10-hp and smaller are usually considered disposable except for bearings or the centrifugal switch.
Stupidity should be a crime, especially for drivers. I have NO patience for them.

From what I understand that he is saying, it's tripping the thermal breaker on the motor. I'd expect, with a winding going to ground, for it to trip the breaker in the mains panel. That is, provided the unit is wired correctly to begin with...

Unless you're dealing with a cap issue, bearing issue, or centrifugal switch issue these no name probably Chinese motors aren't worth servicing.

At least it's a belt drive compressor so it should be relatively easy to replace.

I've given up. It's actually my dad's compressor. He's thinking about replacing it. It's several years old now.

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

Late to the party but I already found these.

              .
Had to replace that on my big old Craftsman compressor last year.
That compressor puts out 10-11cfm @90psi [I used to sand-blast cars] so replacing it wouldn't be cheap.

c_hegge- I had similar issues with my furnace motor. There were dead spots on the armature. Replaced motor, and life was good. If you carefully give it a spin when it's trying to start, will it run up to full speed? My furnace would get stopped in a dead spot, but start right up as soon as I gave it a spin. I had the advantage of not having a start cap to muddle the mix.

If you turn it while it tries to start, it spins up and runs for about 30 secs before tripping the breaker. During the 30 secs that it runs for, you can hear what sounds like arcing inside it.

Measure restistance on each coil (might be the wrong english word for it). Also measure between each coil and ground. You probably have some sort of short if you hear arcing. However fixing that is quite a bit of work, if there is a "slight" short.
