    Dead Lineman's Handsets

I have 2 Harris TS22Ls. I left them in my garage for 2 years and let the batteries die.

I replaced the CR2032 and the 9V battery in one of them but the keypad is completely dead and you can't hear dial tone when its hooked up to a phone line. The loudspeaker kinda works since the CR2032 was changed when hooked up to a tone generator.

On the other one I just changed the 9V battery and its completely dead. Anyone ever repaired one of these or maybe have the service manual?

I was very puzzled by the title of the thread.

Just did not know what to expect...

It seems very odd that a unit would malfunction just from batteries dying.
Could you possibly be dealing with a corrosion problem on the circuit board or other internals?
Test lead wires confirmed as good with ohmmeter?
Is there a -reset- function that needs to be completed? Especially since -both- units are acting the same way after battery replacement. Do these sets have a programmed function or memory?

Mine's a TS21 that does not use batteries, so I cannot help in that aspect.

EDIT: Found a manual online- http://www.datacomtools.com/Manuals/ts22l.pdf

Odd. The Harris manual makes no mention of the 2032 cell. Another forums says that the ones with the cell were made special for GTE and the 2032 keeps the stored numbers alive when you change the 9v batt.

Someone also indicated there is a 3rd battery. The one in the middle banded in white in the attached pic.

FYI - Not my pic. Wording is not mine.

EDIT - Circled other battery in yellow.

Mine doesn't have that 3rd battery.

It could be water damage but I thought these were waterproof. The leads still work. There is some sound, even when I pull the battery out.

condensation. garages are known to do that. my friend lost many motherboards that way. a waterproof shell does nothing when the moisture starts inside.

I don't see any visible damage.

Wow. One down, one to go. I switched both 470uf caps and put in a new CR2032 battery. Tested it today and it worked.
