    Fake caps? (pic heavy)

    Here i have a few caps that i got at aliexpress some years ago most seem original to me, what do you think?

    nichicon VR(M) 2200 16V (in tape) --> original to me but no low ESR model
    nippon chemi-con KZG 1500 16V (in tape)--> original to me, but unreliable series
    Rubycon ZL 470 25V and 1000 10V (in tape)-->original to me, good for PSU
    nippon chemi-con KY 220 35V and 330 25V (in a bag)-->original to me, good for PSU
    nippon chemi-con KZH 680 25V (in a bag)-->FAKE rubber base without markings

    All caps seem to meet the specs, even the one i think is fake (at least when unused)

    The Rubycon and Nichicon don't look like counterfeit. The KZG could actually be counterfeit too, but I'm willing to bet counterfeit KZG are better than the real thing. Aliexpress is about as bad as eBay and Amazon, with respect to counterfeit caps. Best to stick to authorized distributors, which will immensely lower the chances of counterfeit caps.

      at least the sleeves on yours look intact. the suncon wg i got off aliexpress had the sleeves flapping around on top around the vent while others had the sleeves flapping around on the bung. either they are genuine factory rejects because the sleeve wasnt formed properly around the cap case (the sweatshop worker doing the sleeving was a nub) or someone resleeved them and did a terrible job.

        Lots of them look real but i wouldn't risk putting them into anything.

        I have a few fake sanyo [suncon] capacitors.
        I'm not a expert, I'm just doing my best.

            yepp ultimate electronics store is where i got mine from too.

            i checked the capacitance, vloss and esr using a 12864 gm328 esr meter that i also got off aliexpress and the caps i got all tested within spec. it could be genuine caps, some of which are factory rejects or really good fakes. what i cant test with the esr meter is how long the caps will last in actual use... that is the only definite indication of real or fake.

              You have at least two bad caps already.
              BTW, do not post the same thing in many threads, should start a new thread in the Audio section.

                I was looking at my fake cap stockpile again, this time at a 10V 2.2mF Sanyo WG. I was testing the leakage on my Sencore and noticed that the leakage kept going up and up (capacitance is within spec as well as ESR). Each charge/discharge cycle the leakage got worse... I wonder what the failure mechanism within the cap is... almost seems like something is plating out.

                Might need to build a cap stress tester and make a video of them exploding under "normal" situations...

                  Try to reform the cap for a few hours and test again, maybe the cap has been for a long time in the shelf.

                    I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

                    For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

                    It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

                    Hello,

                    First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

                    I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

                    I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                    Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
                    by Paxman_Swede
                    Hello!

                    I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

                    The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

                    I have studied the board and...

                    Fake Caps in Xbox 360
                    by Galraedia
                    I decided to take one of the Rubycon capacitors out of a phat Xbox 360 with a Zephyr motherboard and noticed that all the Rubycon capacitors near the CPU were fake. The capacitors in question are Rubycon MFZ 680uf 6.3V and they all have a bullseye bottom, something not found in genuine Rubycon capacitors. None of them were leaking, they all have the K top, and the system has never been opened before. It appears Microsoft was using fake capacitors in the Xbox 360, or the Chinese facility where the console was manufactured in was using them and passing them off a genuine. Just thought I'd share...

                    Help with switching power supply caps
                    by captain150
                    I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
                    I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
