Whatever you do, don't be "that guy" who's "unusually low." Otherwise, you become an easy mark and are "borrowed" for lots of little things that bite you in the ass; all the while you're grumbling about "being worth more."

I'll put this another way. How much do the local companies, the ones that hire hacks (they're everywhere), charge for the same thing, while improperly diagnosing? You know the ones- blower won't run, therefore the only solution is a new airhandler/system.

Be fair to yourself- if it's your first job for someone, charge the usual. Do NOT give any first time discount, etc, else it'll be "expected" in the future. Not worth it... Yea, "going low" may get you that first job someplace/for someone, but it's a losing proposition in time.

When hiring an HVAC tech, my buddy gives them a test during the job interview. It's a couple relays and contactor they have to troubleshoot with a multimeter.
It should take a couple minutes but 80% of applicants can't figure out the problem- they are used to blindly changing parts until things work.
Most HVAC techs are pretty bad. Instead of cleaning the flame rod, they replace it and make 33-50% markup on parts. $250 to do that!

That's a perfect example- the flame rod scam (among others).

Honeywell themselves suggest changing it only when the insulator's broken.

You're supposed to clean it every year, it's called "maintenance."

Don't get me started on the "young bulls" who immediately blame the t'stat when the cond fan runs and the comp doesn't on a straight-cool AC. Both motors are fed off the same contactor; unless there's burned wires that compressor has power anytime the fan does. The HP/LP switches break the ckt to the contactor coil; it's not them because the contactor's pulled in.

Now suggest the internal OL in the comp, which this dummy never heard of? No way! You'll get "I've installed hundreds of these units."

And can't read the wiring diagram to save his life.

System had TXV but no hard start, so comp was attempting to start against pressure differential, and kicked the internal OL. Like those window ACs that say "wait three minutes before restarting." One "Kickstart" or "5-2-1" fixed the "thermostat"- I mean hard-starting compressor.

                    It's not the thermostat, stoooopid.

I've gone behind, and did a better job with a plain brass manifold, those with fieldpieces or testos who didn't know superheat from superDUMB.

Here is hard fast rule as long as it NOT sealed systems problem any one item repair start at $75 to $150 depending on what you have to do and how hard it is to get to item that needs to be replaced

Let say that you need to replace a fan motor and it is easy to get to and your Fan motor shaft and blower wheel are NOT rusted then I would charge $125 for
Labor but mean that I would clean the blower wheel replace the motor check the charge level and make sure everything thing works the way it should

Let say the same thing again except this time the fan motor is hard to get at it and motor shaft and blower wheel are rusted I am going to tell this customer that there is a good chance that might have replace the blower wheel as well

Now I might charge this customer $150 to $200 for labor depending how this customer acts when I tell them that they might have to replace the blower wheel to if they act a little cheap about it then would be the $250 labor rate or more depending what the cost of the blower wheel is and you do not give them a quote for the labor unit you know what the cost of the blower wheel is

                          I hope this helps

Two things you have to remember

One look at the hole job and see what it going take to the job right the first time and give the customer the service that they should get for the money that they are paying you to do it

Second charge enough money to cover the cost in case you having to fix something that you over looked that way related to what went there to fix in the first place
