    Flux

Does anybody know how to make up soldering flux? When I worked for Marconi Avionics ,the rework technician made his own stuff .
I could do with some nice thin stuff.

    thanks

If you really want to make it yourself there are some How To's on the internet.

If you have rosin soldering flux paste, like the kind from RadioShack, you can thin it with isopropyl alcohol.

How old school was he? Take some pine rosin and mix in enough alcohol to achieve the desired viscosity. The basic idea is you mix a small amount of a reactive (with metal oxides) acid into a carrier, solution suitable for the environment it's used in.

If it were plumber's flux (not for electronics) for example, put some zinc chloride in petroleum jelly or to back step even further, dissolve zinc in hydrochloric acid to make the zinc chloride. If you wanted it water soluble, the acid goes in water instead and a thickening agent is added.

Now I'm drifting... most likely the tech used pine rosin and alcohol, that's the mildly activated flux used for decades for hand soldering.

Never seen mix-your-own solder flux ... not sure whether it would be permitted in hyper-controlled manufacturing environments. I'd expect solder flux to be reasonably available through places that carry electronic components.

^ If you wanna try making your own. The reviews and the "forum" posts (bottom of the page) have some additional details.

I'm using this stuff and it's pretty good.

BTW can anyone tell me where can I order some liquid flux online??

If you search the PN you can probably find it cheaper.
Mouser carries it but they have the wrong pic so I used that link.
Frys Electronics usually does to but not on-line so you have to walk-in.

I use it with a dispenser bottle that has a long needle type tip.
