Shelly plus 1 dead, does not switch

Anyone got any Shelly remote devices around here?
I’ve got a few of these and they were all working fine for about a year. Today I noticed that one of them that controls a single light switch isn’t working at all. I mean it’s so dead, even the light switch doesn’t control the relay. No clicking, no anything whatsoever. Unfortunately it’s in the basement in a dark room and trying to get it out is going to be interesting. Maybe there is some carnage in there, who knows. It was hooked up to power mains.

The other exact same one is in the same room, like 5 feet tops away controlling an air exchanger on a different AC circuit, but it’s powered through a low voltage adapter survived just fine! Weird.

If it was weather / power related, nothing else died in the house.

Gonna be interesting looking inside and see what happend and how it works.

Here is the carnage and the fix.

Problem was that the phase and neutral had cold solder joints!
Resoldered all of them and my Shelly is working once more!

Mine have two 400V caps fitted. I measured around couldn't find anything else wrong, so I fitted a wire with a plug, plugged it in and this Shelly popped up again in my app. I can control it, so all is good.

Is there vibration on the controller because the only time I see it that bad is when the hole unit vibration or the terminal pins heat up and cool down many times and over a period of time you see this or just shite soldiering joints to begin with

Nope, no vibrations. It sits inside the box for the light switch. It barely fits in our North American boxes. They are smaller than the European ones.

one of the relay cotacts is cracked too - looks like maybe a production problem or they took a beating in transit

Sooo.... I put the repaired Shelly plus 1 back into the light switch and works A1 again.

I had to look again at the pics and sure enough, it looks like one crack at the relay. I put the Shelly back under the microscope and it was fine.
These Shelly's are pretty nicely packaged in their boxes. One would think that should be good enough. A production problem? Maybe... It worked good for almost a year.
Our electrical boxes in NA are smaller than the European ones. So jamming a Shelly behind a light switch with all the wires is an art!

I googled this device and found out that have some interesting devices I might buy a couple of them to control some things in my new shed

But if buy them I will definitely be taking it apart to see if there are any soldering joint issues before using them

That’s the reason I got it. Making things controllable that weren’t. Got my 20 year old air exchange on a schedule since about close to a year now. Works perfect. I wanted to do more too, but haven’t got the time to mess around and make more things controllable. Haven’t even finished my new work room in the basement. Oh well…
