Deionized water is commonly used in the manufacturing of PCBs. It is highly reactive and can potentially damage parts if they're left in it too long. Don't think I'd ever use tap water even as a first cleaning step. Reverse Osmosis (RO) water with a detergent, if necessary, is a good first cleaning step. Follow that up with some DI water and you should be good to go.

You should be extremely careful when using any kind of chemical when cleaning boards. Some of them will dissolve plastic parts and encapsulation and others will break down conformal coatings.

put simply, you can use dish washing liquid and hot/boiling water mixed 1part liquid to about 5-10parts water to clean pcb's as long as you properly rinse them afterwards and force them dry with hot air.

Sounds cheaper than IPA but I'd be afraid of not getting all the water out, even with forced hot air. I might try it on some of my junk things around here and see what happens.

And after reading through these (some of which I read before I bought one, so go me go!) it sounds like it's safe to use on smd populated boards. Well, I have some deadish boards laying around, I guess the only way to be sure is to test em, right?

Unless you want to pick out smd parts in the bottom of the tank, do not use any ultrasonic cleaners on smd boards.

So since I bought this ultrasonic bath for trying to revive water damaged cell phones which are full of smd parts, it was a waste and I should just return it?

i use ipa, but if i put high temperature like 50-60° it will evaporete very much unless u put some thin transparent thing to reduce that. also i use ipa to clean stencil, but after some cleaning, ipa become dirt and doesnt clean so much.

I just bought an ultrasonic bath for boards that have corrosion and my question to all of you is what solution should be used? A couple of folks from these boards have said freon is what was used, but it's no longer allowed. Ammonium hydroxide is mentioned here ( http://bluewaveinc.com/ultrasonic-cleaning-101 ) for copper oxide cleaning but I'd like to get others opinions before I buy some.
