    Analog meter

    Hi,
I'd like to order an analog multimeter but there are so many to chose from and also price variations so I though i'd ask the experts.
Here is what an ebay search brought

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40

Of course i want something inexpensive that can do the work.

I have a cheap digital mm, capwizard esr and soon will add more to the tools bin.

    Thanks

Simpson used to be the Cadillac of meters. Most used ones are pretty old but still good. Sunwa are also good.

As I suggested in your other thread

            https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25106

you should consider getting a good multimeter that can measure capacitance and has an analog bar graph.

The VC6013 is $23.74 + $6.99 shipping. The fake/counterfeit Sunwa is $17.99 + 4.99 shipping. The total for both is $53.71 for dubious goods at best.

For $53.71, you can get an used Fluke 115 off ebay in that price range. It will support capacitance measurements up to 9999uF and has an analog bar graph. The 115 will measure down to the nanofarad range.

If you really want an analog multimeter, than the real Sanwa can be purchased from an authorized dealer in Canada

                  Re: Analog meter

                  1) I only comment on what I have used or own. The Fluke 117 is equivalent to the 115 except the 117 adds non contact voltage feature.

                  2) A video review of the Fluke 117 is at (done by Dave Jones @ eevblog.com)

                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k9nVg03Wi4

                  3) Another choice in the $50 ish dollar price range, with patience on ebay, is an used Fluke 77 IV. Like the 115, it measures capacitance and has an analog bargraph.

                  https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=24239

                  4) The Fluke 77 IV and 170 series has almost identical internal components so this video review applies. In Martin's video, he talks about the bargraph. Martin also owns a 115 so you can see it in action in the same video.

                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FoqF3...CD696&index=18

                  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm3Zv...CD696&index=19

                  5) It is, however, unlikely you will find a Fluke 170 series multimeter in the $50 range unless it is mispriced or broken.

                    Re: Analog meter

I just recently bought a used Fluke 77 IV and I am extremely happy with it. I have a thread on it in this section of the forum if you are interested. I was wanting a capacitor tester in a multimeter I could use and this fits the bill quite nicely. I despise the Fluke 117, I bought one for the capacitor tester feature before getting my 77 and could not stand it. I practically gave it away because I hated it so much. If you need to measure in the pF range then neither of these meters will do that but the Fluke 179 will if I am not mistaken but they are on the expensive side even when bought used.

Way ahead of you. See point #3 in post #9. With respect to such topics, I rarely, miss out any relevant information!!

No, you despise the Fluke 113.

The Fluke 114, 115, 116 and 117 operate differently from the Fluke 113. I will advise people to stay clear of the 114. It, inexplicably, does not have a diode test function which is a requirement for troubleshooting.

For the purposes of troubleshooting/repairing TVs, LCDs, etc here on badcaps, we rarely need to measure down to the pF range.

I haven't used them personally, but I recommend avoiding the Fluke 15B and 17B. They are not authorized for sale and there is no support for them outside China.

They are well built as per teardown by Dave Jones @ eevblog, but for the asking price (ebay) $80 and $100 respectively, you have a lot of options.

I would add not to bother with an analog meter that uses less than a 9v with 2 additional AA's- many times the purpose of using an analog meter is the ability to apply higher voltage needed to test certain transistors etc.

There is only one analogue multi meter The Avo 8 this was the meter designed by thorn the makers of Ferguson TV all the measurements on the circuit diagrams were with reference to this meter very old but on eBay around £50.

May I inquire as to why you want an analog one, rather than a digital one?

Flukes are definitely high-end DMMs. However, a lot of people aren't quite prepared to spend a lot of money on a multimeter. Depending on what you plan to use it for, you may only need a basic $30 meter. If you are a computer technician/repairman, you may want, and be able to afford, a Fluke, but if you're just a hobbyist I recommend the Craftsman meter available at Kmart. I bought one of these 5-6 years ago and it's still going strong. I give it a great review:

If you really must have an analog meter, I recommend Simpson as well. They have been around since the 1920's and have never produced anything short of top-of-the-line products. The university at which I work uses WWII-era Simpsons and they still work great. They are highly recommended meters. You can't really go too far wrong with a Simpson!

                                Best wishes and kind regards,
                                Matt

                                      Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the good information.
I guess I'll just try to get me a used Simpson.

The reason I want an analog meter is because some measurements can only be taken with an analog meter as Jestine Yong states on his smps ebook.

I haven't read his book, but I have seen samples of it.

If you want an analog multimeter, Simpson would be a good choice for USA members.

I'm no SMPS guru by any means, but after 2.75 years of participation here, I can assure you that we, the regulars, have never asked anyone to use an analog multimeter for any kind of troubleshooting in the SMPS area.

The most likely things in a SMPS to fail are, in no particular order,

bad caps, open fuse, shorted bridge rectifier, shorted power mosfet, open resistor, shorted diode, dodgy solder joints, and conductive glue

All the above can be tested with a digital multimeter.

On the rare occasion, we have asked or suggested that an oscilloscope might be useful.

Most analog meters are actually current driven - a current is needed to deflect the pointer full scale. They can be lots of different values. There are ones that can take several amperes to swing the pointer as they have internal shunts.

On the other hand there are many that are rated in microamps for the intent that they draw as little power as possible from the devices under test. Some are 1mA, 500µA, 200µA, 100µA, and the ubiquitous 50µA frequently used in analog VOMs. There are even 20, 25, 30 µA and even down to 10µA. Been collecting a bunch of different ratings and...

                                          Hi

I want to change the scale of an analog meter, to monitor the charge of an li-ion single cell, so the needle at the end would point 4.2 volts and the 0 on the meter would point 2.5 volts or so, i tried to add diodes or a zener in series with the meter but the changes of the ambient temperature also changes the voltage value on the meter
I wonder how i can accomplish this so the meter would be precise at any temperature ?

Is it possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue meter?
                                          by chth96
I read EBOOK of Testing Electronic Component and found that

"In order to test the small blue resin coated ceramic disk capacitor which has 104 50v specification,it is possible to test this small ceramic capacitor by making use of analogue meter.
Set to times 10Kohm that has 12v output from the probe to check disorder of ceramic capacitor.
It is not uncommon that testing result of digital capacitance meter is okay,But It show shorted reading when you check it with analogue meter."

Is it really possible to test small ceramic disc capacitor with analogue...

I have had with regular AA batteries that leak this meter is expensive new I already replaced the battery battery clips once and the same thing happened again and I am tried of so it is getting modified to accommodate lithium ion batteries that are the same size excluding the positive terminal and removing the battery clips I will have enough room for the BMS protection board

I going to put 3 lithium ion battery in parallel with the BMS protection board and a way to charge the battery externally and heat shrink the battery pack and use a JST connector so I easily remove the battery...

Destroying or not destroying analog meter movements

Just wondering - I'm sure some here have destroyed analog meters in the past. I'm curious as to how much overcurrent is needed to destroy these things.

I accidentally left my 20KΩ/V analog meter in the 10mA range trying to monitor a solar cell. The solar cell was in subdued lighting at the time (twilight/dusk) and was getting 1mA or so. However I had forgotten about it and later the full sun shone on it...

In full sun, or typically when it's sunny, the cell delivers 100mA (it should be more than this as far as I know, possibly age related decay, dunno, hence...
