Riello Power Dialog 600 4.2kW UPS

Got this small UPS as a freebie, very very nice!

Anyway, I've been using it for perhaps two years now, the thing was made in -98 and has never had it's batteries exchanged yet it has worked remarkably well with very long runtimes... (Though I'm only taxing it max 20% of it's total capacity...)

When it was installed in the server room at the previous owners place it also worked really good, the only bad thing about it is that it is a single phase design, therefore it requires 30Ah on one phase which is not common in Sweden... We use 3 phase instead...

Anyway that does not matter because I am not close to coming near the limit of the 10Ah fuse... This was the reason I got it for free though... Because the previous owner got too many servers on it that the line to the UPS could not handle the load (the fuses eventually blew)

The design of the UPS is also really good, it runs the inverter constantly (double-online power conversion) which means that I always get a constant voltage out of it, no matter the input voltage... There is also no cut off delay before the batteries kick in if there is a brownout since the UPS is already running from the inverter...

See these two pics, they are of an APC Smart-UPS 1500, a pretty highend UPS yet it is not a double-online power conversion design like the Riello but a line-interactive design... The first picture shows it running from the power the Riello Power Dialog supplied, the second shows the power it is getting now that the Riello is not online anymore...

APC Smart-UPS 1500 running from the Riello Power Dialog 600:

APC Smart-UPS 1500 running from line voltage:

Now a week or so ago the Riello Power Dialog failed on me for the first time, the reason I found out when I opened it, one of the 22 7.2Ah 12v batteries had cracked open and was thus shorted... And the UPS runs them all in series giving 310VDC so the failure of one battery means the failure of the whole UPS... (most UPS are built this way...)

So now I'm on the lookut for new batteries, the original ones where made by a company in Italy (the UPS is also Italian) FIAMM-GS FG20722

These are very regular not at all fancy batteries with a design life of 3-5 years... Yet they held up for almost 9 years...

That APC UPS I was talking about, I've replaced the batteries in it too, it uses 2x 17Ah 12v batteries. The nice thing was that I managed to find batteries with a design life of 10 years instead of 5. Yet the cost was still 48% lower compared to APC original batteries... They are called 69-479-07 at Elfa.se

Elfa do however not have 7.2Ah 12v batteries with a 10 year design life, only 3-5... (See 69-532-30 which has the exact right size and terminals, or the slightly cheaper but with wrong terminal size: 69-532-28)

So I'm wondering if any of you that has not ignored my über long post by now have heard of any 7.2Ah 12v batteries with a 10 year design life that are not too expensive? The ones on Elfa with the correct terminal size costs 23.4USD when you buy more than 10...

Of course they would need to be located in Sweden or atleast Scandinavia because the weight of these batteries is ca 60KG! (least I wanna pay and arm and a leg for shipping...) They should also be new batteries, because the shelf life for lead acid batteries is not very good at all...

I understand that was free and maybe I see why. Most of the value is in the battery bank, is that 22?
I've installed jobs like that but they have glass matt lead acid banks.

You could consider a generator if that kind of power backup is needed.
Whole house propane powered generators are very popular here after the last huricane.

Most UPSes use regular SLA batteries, if bought new this UPS would cost between 2500-3500$

The replacement batteries will only be about 250-300$

I'm not crying at all, I'm just wondering if this type of battery is available with a 10 year design life... And this battery type is very regular, infact I've seen them in 3 other UPSes by APC and another one by some brand I don't remember...

They are used elsewhere too, in motorcycles and also extensivley in alarm systems for example...

Here is a pic of the other side of the UPS...

these are what i use for ups and my homemade electric bikes.
i have a jump pack with a 12 year old hawker in it that will still crank a cold 500 ci caddilac v8.
impressive for a 16 ah battery.

With the batteries, you need to charge them fully and evenly (and let them cool down for a couple of hours). This would mean that all batteries need to have a voltage variance within 10 millivolts (e.g. 12.6, 12.597, 12.595, 12.603, 12.605). I think this happened to me in a UPS with two 12V SLA batteries in series.
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

BTW- lead-acid batteries have a good shelf life as long as the acid is not introduced until you want to use them. This is why many small lead-acid batteries are sold with the acid in a separate container and you must add it later.
                Ludicrous gibs!

Re: Riello Power Dialog 600 4.2kW UPS

Regarding the batteries used in the UPS, they are ABS batteries (Absorbed Glass Mat) I.e. you neither should nor can fill them... They do have release valves but every battery has those, otherwise the battery would explode if it the charger broke down and started charging too much... I've got that "leak proof" yadda yadda battery from the APC UPS here... It has been cracked open and has had stuff coming out if it... The metal in the chassi was white from the stuff inside...

I also found out something very fun; the APC batteries are sticked together with tape so as to not reveal the real manufacturer... Forced them apart, one of my old APC UPSes came with a CSB GP 1272 which has Made in China all over it... That is a über cheap battery that they put their logo and then mark up about 500%...

In their defense though I also found a Panasonic LC-R127R2P1 Made in USA from another APC UPS... All these batteries are old and dead...

I also have a Hitachi HV7-12, it's probably from a APC UPS too, one of the best batteries I've ever used. Design life still only 3-5 years...

I've only been able to find 3 batteries with over 5 years of design life, first the "Hitachi HF7-12" It has a 6-8 year design life but does not seem to be for sale in Sweden

Next the "BatteryCorp BC-12V7.2T" It has a 10 year design life but I've been unable to locate it anywhere in the world (a google search just brings up it's PDF file lol)

Last and most promising is the "Panasonic LC-P127R2P", it has a 10 year design life at 20°C (the others are also rated for 10 years at 20°C, it drops to 6 years at 25°C)

I've found it available but way to expensive, buying those batteries in Sweden at the place I found would cost more than 100% above the cost of the batteries with a 3-5 year design life... Or 45$ each not including shipping if you will...

I'm actually using Vietnam made batteris in all my UPS's right now, and so far so good. My Smart-UPS 1250 will run my rig for over an hour before it shuts down.

I got the batteries on Ebay from Gruber Power Services if I remember right.

Those thin batteries look familiar, I have a Sola UPS that used 10 6 volt batteries of that size. I ended up replacing them with 5 12 volt batteries instead since they were exactly the same size as two 6 volt ones and fit in the same space. Gruber also has the thin batteries if I recall. They also have 18ah batteries the same size as the original 17ah ones that were in my SU1250.

i found a few wheelchair batteries in the last pallet load.made in vienam too.
every one of the csb china batts were bad.every one of the vietnam ones were good.
these were 1 year old pulls.

its positive plate corrosion.any lead acid can fail like that.
                                as they corrode they expand.
