it's difficult to make an x-box caplist,
there are 7-8 different motherboards, and lots of different psu's

I see.
Well i have a 1.4 board but i dont want the modify the PSU. I intend to adapt a top notch PC ATX PSU and use that. Will move the board in a new case in the end.

Will revert back soon with some pics and show what i want to change. Will try to use as much info from this thread. Really good stuff.
Thanks.

Hi all,
So i'm making a return to this project. I replaced the xbox PSU with a PC one and now i'm looking to replace the caps on my 1.4 board.

Looking for the caps of the board on websites i found myself with some questions.
Can i use low esr caps instead of general purpose(some are low esr) for this project?

An example : On the board we have : 1x 16v 680uf Nichicon HM (8x15mm)
Can i use this cap : http://ro.farnell.com/nichicon/rnu1c...0#techDocsHook
(you can change the language in the top right area, flag icon)

Another example:
3x 6.3v 1500uf Nichicon HD (10x20mm)
Replacement:
http://ro.farnell.com/nichicon/plg0j...rfnonsku=false

How low can i go with the esr?

Also can i use caps that do not fit properly, like size, diameter, lead spacing? Are there any issues with this.? I really dont mind if the board will look funny.

Notes:
Cost is not an issue for this project.
Quality of the caps is.
I want to keep the base values as they were, like voltage and capacitance.
I'm not an electrical engineer

Many thanks.

Something is wrong with farnell because nichicon lg does not have a 1500 uf cap on the datasheet, but they do have a 1200uf which should be ok to replace those hd, because of the lower esr and higher ripple spec.
Use low esr to replace low esr caps, And for the general purposse caps you dont need low esr just look for something with similar specs and from a good brand ( nichicon, chemi con, rubycon, matsushita...)

Thanks Drack.

Does anybody knows if the xbox board is using caps for it's sound output.
If yes, which ones.? Are the below caps somehow used for the above purpose?

13x 25v 22uf Nichicon VR
7x 25v 100uf Nichicon VR

I can post a pic with the board if anybody wants to have a look.
Reason is that i can go with some good caps if this is the case:
Nichicon KZ or Elna Silmic II .

Thanks.
I found out that the xbox has digital only output.

So i managed to finish my project here. I started with a trash xbox mobo. The capacitors were in a bad condition. Have leaked and bulging.

Trash board(now is a good one) uses:
-Nichon Hz near the cpu
-Nichicon HM
-Elna capacitors
-some Nichicon polymers
Values for capacitors used are the same as original.

Then i moved to the real deal. This board is polymer only. Almost same values used.
Exception is that i used 35v 100uf instead of 25v 100uf.
Capacitors used:
Nichicon HZ, Panasonic FM and polymers from Nichicon.

All in all i attached some pics for everybody to see.

I want to thank OP and people who replyed in this thread.

PS: My skill with the iron is mediocre at best but considering i didnt not solder since i used to be student i think it turned well. Learned a lot doing this small project.

Hi all,

Great topic first of all. Just bought a NTSCU Xbox from flea market and all caps are removed from mobo. So, i need cap list with location info. For example:

1uf 10v at C690 at pcb tag/marking etc.

I think mobo is v1.6 due to the mfg date of 04-10-2004.

Can anyone help?

i will be trying this next week btw.

Thanks but it seems like we dont have the same mobo, i'm in this configuration:

Versions 1.2 to 1.5
-------------------------------------------

Mobo Caps:
13x 25v 22uf Nichicon VR (5x11mm)
7x 25v 100uf Nichicon VR (6x11mm)
3x 6.3v 3300uf Nichicon HM (10x25mm)
2x 10v 3300uf Nichicon PW (12.5x25mm)
1x 16v 680uf Nichicon HM (8x15mm)
3x 6.3v 1500uf Nichicon HD (10x20mm)
1x 1F 2.5v SuperStor

And i have to replace the 3x 6.3v 3300uf Nichicon HM (10x25mm)

So, still no ?

Crossing fingers for you btw !

where are those caps on the board??
if they are in front of the cpu then you will see 2 empty spaces for more.

Yes they are the 3 in arrow in front of the CPU (http://www.vgamuseum.info/images/zaa...pu_s_mobo2.jpg), and yes i see 2 empty spaces for more.

The website you gave me for the capacitor seems to be a great place to buy electronic component, i hope that delivery to France is Free also. This website is like THE BEST ONE to buy electronic component in Europe ? Cause im still looking for a good source to do my different electronic purchase.

Thanks

dont forget to throw the "supercap" in the bin!
no need to fit anything in it's place unless your working on a 1.6 board.
