Re: do i need java software?

It's a sort of programming language, like .Net....

Basically people can write code and then Java "converts" this code into something between source code and applications, and this "something" can run on various operating systems.

You can also think of it like Flash ... something that allows animations and stuff to run in browsers in different operating systems.

A good example of software that uses Java is LibreOffice, an open source "office" software : http://www.libreoffice.org/

If you install it, it automatically installs Java in the background.

JRE (java runtime environment) is used by a lot of online and desktop applications. Yes, you need it.

You'll be able to run it just fine.
Just make sure you keep it updated, as old versions have significant security risks.

Re: do i need java software?

I've had many service calls, where the customer says "I can't run (whatever)".
I go out to the PC, install Java, Flash and Shockwave, then the very latest K-Lite Codec pack and then test the system with sample files that I take with me and the PC will then play everything. Problem fixed..... Service call complete.

If I go back there on subsequent calls, I update everything that I gave them on the last call.

When installing the latest version of Java, then go to your startup folder and remove the Java Scheduler, so it's not sitting there running every time you boot up your PC.

                    Cheers Mates!
