JBL EON 515XT Powered Monitor (making crackling noise)

Hi badcaps people this is my neighbors monitor and I'm trying to help him out.

I'm attaching a few PDFs that include schematic, troubleshooting and layout.

I've run the tests that they recommend and the results were good.

However, I see they are Lelon caps, so just wondering if you guys think that could be an issue? None are bulged or leaky and I don't have an ESR meter.

Do you think this crackling could be result of caps, or do you have any other ideas? Let me know if you want pics.

    Thanks!

    Marty

Hey Bud thanks for joining me here It's a little quiet, compared to the TV forum

I guess I didn't describe the issue good enough. Honestly, I haven't fired this thing up myself(I will today), I just took his word on what it was doing. He said they were in the middle of a set and it started making "cracking/crackling" noise and he turned it down some then it started getting worse and he just turned it off.

I asked if the sound went away while it was acting up and he said no, the music was still audible while it was "breaking up"(is that a better term? not sure)

I also forgot to say that I tested resistance on both drivers and they check out. 4 ohm and 2 ohm respectively.

Today I plan to get a source hooked up and drive this thing. I'm going to try to see if the noise is coming out of both speakers. Maybe one of them is bad even though it's got a good resistance?

Anyhow, thanks for joining in Bud, I will add more info soon.

This powered speaker uses B-AMP setup, one amplifier for the Bass (Woofer), one amplifier for the Tweeter (high frequency driver). So you need to find out which speaker is putting out the noisie, the Woofer or the tweeter, just have to listen real close.

Re: JBL EON 515XT Powered Monitor (making crackling noise)

Would I be able to isolate it by unplugging each speaker, one at a time? (or could that cause damage?)

          Thanks!

yes you can, by the way, it is BI-AMP.
Also, does it make crackling sound if the input jack not connected? The noise can be generated by the pre-amp which feeds the low level audio to the powered speakers input jacks.

              Could be a dry solder. Similar to this;

I know it a complete different speaker but you get my drift.
Do NOT touch heatsinks when testing for voltages as they may be LIVE!

I have the same issue with one of my EON 15G2s.....I use them for stage monitors and after an hour or so one starts crackling (like bacon frying) I can unplug all input & output cables & it keeps crackling !
