    What's this SMD component?

What's the SMD component in the attached photos?

IMG_20180529_150235.jpg shows a close up of the component and IMG_20180531_013659.jpg shows a bit more of the circuit that the component is part of.

    Thanks

How did you work out that it is a Tantalum capacitor?

Does the "x" marking indicate the Package/Case size?

It is typical case style that we have experience with and seen many times before. The white band in this case is 'Positive'.
        Is it tested bad?
What is the circuit not doing?

From the pic, it's on a SMPS output where you need low ESR. A tantalum will roast there.
So I think it would be a SMD polymer cap, 22uF 25V.

Not sure why there is a river of solder and high-current traces around a little 22uF cap.
You won't get an a amp of ripple current out of it...

The component was "blown" completely off the board, the pad on the positive end was almost completely burnt off and and there is damage to the pcb substrate too.

I was told "I think it was connected up incorrectly ".

An op-amp and a couple of other mystery components in the same section of the board were damaged too.

Further photos of the circuit that the mystery component is part of.

                Tantalum failure mode is shorts.
I can see at least two bad solder joints and blown IC.

                  The blown IC is a AD8544 op-amp.

I can't see a bad solder joint where you marked BAD SOLDER JOINTS, I think the two prongs are a shunt.

                    Re: What's this SMD component?

                    AD8544 is a 5V part, this board has 12V?

Look at how the solder wet the leads and then look at other through hole device soldered leads, it doe not matter what the component is..

This takes a lot of guts to admit but it makes things much easier to diagnose...

Yeah I could see tantalum caps fry like that with reverse polarity... hopefully not too difficult to find what was damaged, but likely significant damage occurred.
