    CD/DVD/BR laser focus "motor" ... FRU = ??

I have a DVD player on the back burner which I think the focus "motor" is shot ... I've not ascertained whether it's the driver or the winding that's bad. If it's the winding that's bad, does it usually mean that the whole sled is replaced or is there a smaller replacement unit?

Perhaps the FRU is the model number of the DVD player (i.e. whole thing.) Sigh, so much for throwaway economy...

Resolder the servo IC and clean/reseat both ends of the FFC to the pickup.

Yes, the entire pickup is replaced as a unit.
If you look carefully, sometimes there's a small cover on the top of the pickup, you may find the leads to the tracking/focus coils.

Ohm them out- the meter current will make them move. Make four checks:

    F- should move lens up/down
F, meter leads reversed- should move lens down/up
T- should move lens to one side
T, meter leads reversed- should move lens to other side

If there's a servo problem, a new pickup won't fix it.
    And pickups are generally non-returnable.

Interesting, so even a few milliamps should move them, or will I need to grab an old analog multimeter that pumps out 100mA?

I hate the design of this (portable) DVD player... can't really work on it. Might have to salvage it for parts...

        "To the moon, Alice!"
A DMM will work to ring them out, but probably won't move them.

Is this one with a built-in display, and that folds up?
If it is, they're pretty pointless, as the batteries do not last long- a year if lucky.
        The poster child for "disposable."
