DVI to HDMI

Trying to figure out the best way to hook up true HD between my pc & tv ...My tv has HD & HDMI....I have a VGA & DVI on my onboard video on the pc and a HDMI up above that...Do i need to use a cable like below?

Some say you dont get sound with the HDMI' but it says on the specs for the cable it has both HighDef Audio & Video.....

You need a Graphics card that has HDMI or DisplayPort connectors to have sound output through the relevant HDMI or DP cable. Otherwise you will have to run a separate audio cable from the PC to TV.

there are some ATI cards that have a sound through the dvi, and you have to use a ATI DVI/HDMI adapter to get the sound, my 2600 Pro for instance

What motherboard do you have?

If it's with AMD chipset, chances are it will pass audio through the HDMI port, so you can just buy a regular hdmi cable (the one in the second link)

You should have a virtual sound card called Digital Audio (HDMI) if that's the case (right click on the speaker icon, Playback devices). If it is, right click on it and select "Set as default device" after you connect your computer to the TV with the HDMI cable.

DVI is also a digital connection, so you get the same quality, but there's no guarantee the video card will pass the audio through it. You can either use a cable like that one in the first link or use an actual DVI to HDMI adapter like this one : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16812270286 (and use a regular hdmi cable like the one in the second link to make the connection)

Avoid the VGA path, it's analogic connection, poor quality. You already have two options, the HDMI and the DVI ports.

If you can't make the audio go through, the tv should have an AUDIO IN feature, a regular jack like the headphone jack or two RCA jacks (round large connectors).

So you'll need either:

If your computer has a HDMI port (which I think you said it did, I bolded it) then use a HDMI cable from your computer to your TV.

Yeah ' its a brand new Asus' it has VGA/DMI/HDMI ... 1920x1080 is what the screen resolution keeps saying it needs to be set at...But when i set it at 1920x1080' i set the zoom on 125 and medium icons' all the icons look fine except on the right...But if i change the res any at all the icons and all looks too small...I got the HDMI working fine but it has this problem any way you hook it up...Never has the problem with xp pro...Just now im having to run windows 7...Here is a screenshot of what im talking about below...If i could just be able to put more icons off to the right but you cant...All else would be fine...

There's two things you can look for.

Some monitors enlarge the image they receive through HDMI so that about 8-10 pixels on all sides go outside the viewing area - go through tv's menus and make sure Scaling is set to "None" or something that says "don't mess with the size"

The ATI drivers also have a feature similar to this, check the ati/amd control center for some options called Underscan or Overscan - sometimes the default setting is 5% or something like that instead of "None".

I have these 4 options on my video card' Center Image/Scale Full Screen/Maintain Display Scaling/Customize Aspect Ratio...I have it set on Scale Full Screen...Im not getting black off to one side like you think. If i were getting a black side all the way up and down i see this would affect my problem....See ' i cant drag another icon over to the right and drop it! I can change the screen resolution and fix it' but then the icons are way too small...I set the icons to medium because large is wayy to big...This is a 42 on the wall' and we use it at night to watch tv or get on the pc...Never had this problem with windows xp pro' Its something in 7 i just cant get right...Setting the resolution to what it ask for ust makes everything else way to small & haven't been able to correct this...
