Visio E371VL Weird Picture at start

Visio E371VL Tv turns on but within a few seconds of turning on, the screen gets lines and it makes a loud noise. I know these units are common for eeprom problems. Could this be an eeprom problem?

I'm no expert but would not suspect eeprom for this - is noise continuos , are the horizontal lines confined to top part of screen, what are voltages doing at start and in fault?

I haven't picked up the tv yet. I was debating. I'm getting it for $20, so it's worth a shot to see if it's a cap problem. From what I was told, when it's in it's booting mode as the startup tone kicks in, it hangs, then the screen locks up. So the smeared screen is the Visio screen. I talked with someone that is very familiar with these units just before you replied and he said that the eeprom causes all kinds of grief but bad caps are not unheard of. I'll guess I'll find out tomorrow when I get it. I've spent more money on worse things than this. hehe

It will be interesting to see what you find. I have a few tvs with eeprom problems and they do confuse things. I'd still be suspicious of component breakdown at warm up. Bad joints, voltage regulators etc.

Wouldn't think eeprom would cause loud noise
I assume no responsibility for any stupid suggestions I might post.

I would guess bad cap on regulator ic on main board.

I just picked up the tv. Looks like there's more to it. I turned it on and the orange Visio light went to white but no screen came on. Now I don't see the orange standby light. I guess the psu is toast. I see there is no 12v going to the main from the psu. The caps look good though. Is there any common faults with these psu's?

Forget about the missing 12v. One of the cables wasn't seated fully. It's doing what the old owner said it's doing. I think it's US4 I want but I do have a US3, US4, UP16, UP10, and UA1. I wanna buy an eeprom just for my own piece of mind. I checked all the psu voltages now. It's reading fine and I've turned it off and on reading them at least 6 times.

                  US4 surely for eeprom.

Eeprom ordered. We'll see if it helps. Do these things have a problem with caps? I might change them just in case.

No fix. It's works for a bit then I lose my voltages for a bit. Then it will turn on and then turn off. It's almost the exact same time when it does it. I click menu, then settings, then add channel, change it to 3 then I get a weird screen at the bottom then it shuts off. The caps look good.

EDIT: I am getting some weird voltages from the MUR640. 60v a side when the tv is off. Then it jumps to 300v but when the tv is on it's more like 140v. I'm thinking it's that MUR640. Is there any other diodes I should replace on this board?

Is that MUR640 in the hot side of the circuit and what did you use for GND ref for the meter?
It sounds like you are checking the Voltage on the hot side and use the chassis for GND ref for the meter which will be wrong.

Use your main cap for ground. While your there what is voltage across main cap while on

How do I access it? Do I have to solder a wire on the bottom of the psu?

Use the (-) side of the bridge rectifier, or you can use the heatsink Q602 (fet) is mounted to on the hot side

At this point I doubt that the problem (Picture) you have has anything to do with the circuit in the hot side.

I agree with Budm, I would think the problem is on the main board or t-con somewhere, without a scope to trace the problem, If the picture is ok then gets bad, try locating it with freeze spray or maybe a heat gun would work?

I think so too. I thought I might have gotten lucky. The eeprom is changed so I'm thinking I have a useless tv. Visio crap!

and try the TV channel input on the main menu.....from your first pics you have the input set on RGB input
