    Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

I got another 52" today, this one is Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA.
I checked the T-CON, cleaned and re-seated the cables, heat/cool T-CON with no luck.
Take the panel apart, the bonding on the right side are bad. I used the Silicone thermal interface pad (http://www.bergquistcompany.com/ther...ls/gap-pad.htm) on all the tabs and also on the T-CON processing IC so its heat is transferred to the metal shield better.
Before I add the pads to the bonding tab, I checked the temperature of the IC on the flexible PCB, they were too hot too touch, the temp is about 155F (same as the 52" SONY I worked on last month).
Hardest part of the repair is to get the assembly off the front bezel by myself and removing the metal frame on the panel.
It has been running for about 2 hours now, so far so good.

Hmm, I have been thinking about getting one of those IR heat guns and now I can see another use for it.

Hardest part of the repair is to get the assembly off the front bezel by myself and removing the metal frame on the panel.
When working on my in-law's 46 inch LCD TV with a tab bond problem, I used the couch ottoman to lift/remove/hold the front bezel/metal frame by myself.

Thanks for the tip on Silicone thermal interface pad.

PS. Thanks for posting at 1AM on a Sunday morning. I hope people who find this thread in the future realize your herculean efforts.

I started at 10 PM and could not stop, too many screws and parts laying around and my cats want to play with the small parts laying on my kitchen floor. That IR gun with Laser is great, got them on sale for HF for $20. It is still running right now.

We don't have HF in Canada. I may have to order a cheap one off ebay, but I did recently learn about a Fluke 59 that is sold only for the China market.

$41 on ebay + free shipping. Hmm, I will have to do some more research on it.

Either that or get an used Fluke 62.

I have a cheapie IR thermometer that is less than $20 from eBay. The laser died a few weeks after purchase (just flickered on and off, probably solder joint or loose connection) but it's very accurate, within 1 degree of my calibrated thermocouple.

have you done a tab bond repair like this before using the pads? i just wondered how long this type of repair may last for? i have read on some posts its only lasted a short while but i presume its its wrong types of pads there are using? i would just be worried if i done this repair for someone and charged them for it and it failed again after a short period of time.i will have a look to see if i can get the pads you use in the uk as i can pick sets up with tab bond issues cheap.thanks for your input cheers vince

Re: Samsung LN52A530P1FXZA Tab bonding repair

This is the second time (first one was 52" SONY, now I wish I use them on ALL (like I did on this SAMSUNG) the tabs instead of just on the two bad tabs)) I use this Silicone thermal interface pad (I use them in our products) for fixing tab bonding problem, they are made to transfer the heat from uneven surfaces and easily handle high temperature. They are not cheap. Sony uses them a lot for transfering heat between T-CON processing chip and the heat sink. It contour itself very well between two surfaces.
I worry about using just rubber sponge or foam since that area gets very hot.

              I am using this one:
              http://www.digikey.com/product-detai...R165-ND/307787

              Spec:

Time will tell of it will last or not, I believe this will be better than rubber bumper or sponge type material.
Another reason I like using this pad because it has tacky surfaces so it stays in place while you putting the metal frame back in place.

I used the furniture bump-ons and used kapton tape to help with the heat. I have no idea whether it will last or not and I have not tested the "fix" very much.

You can get the nice thermal gel from scrapped TV T-cons and high power supplies. I got some from an old server power supply, nice long strips. Will use it next time on tab bonds, great tip.

Budm exactly which pads did you use from that website? Are these the same pads used on the t-con boards etc, between the metal shielding??

See post 7, there is a link to Digikey, I cut it to the size I need. I use it on the IC on the T-CON also.

That one may work, just have to try it.
The thermal conductivity is 3.0 W/m-K (better than the Bergquist) which is twice as much as the Bergquist that I use, it is also thinner (0.100" instead of 0.125") and also softer than Bergquist. I may order some to see.

Thinner is better, as long as the parts are in good mechanical contact.

And you definitely want to use electronics silpads instead of some other materials -- the silpads are designed to conduct heat, other materials might actually be counterproductive by insulating instead of conducting and/or not holding up to the heat.

It has to be thick enough and not too soft to put pressure on the tab bonding and the frame, if it is too thin and does not make contact with the frame then it wil not work. I know the Bergquist works in two TV so far, hate to experiment since it is not easy job to do.

Hey when you guys do the "Tab Bond Repair", do you go ahead and place the thermal pads on just the offending tab or all of them?

I did just on two bad tabs on the SONY, but I did all the tabs on the SAMSUNG. I wish I did it on all the tabs on the SONY as well which I think the other bondings may fail later on also, it is a real big pain to do it.
