Albeit my K6-2 450 sometimes suffered random errors at stock! Now, I think it was most likely the higher temps. And it's not typical to get errors, despite high temps, when stock!

i remember they had lots of issues if you tried to use the then-new pci slots for example.

and amd k6-2 chips were great.
You must have had the unicorn-powered ones then. I had horrible luck with CPU's of that era that weren't Intel.

        Re: AMD wins!

My K6-2/500 on an Asus P5A motherboard was slower than a 333MHz Pentium II in most applications, but it was stable. That was the first computer I had that didn't crash.

I also had a Cyrix MII-333 (the weird 83MHz bus version). It was equivalent to a 200MHz Pentium MMX in everything I tried to run on it, but it was also stable on a decent motherboard.

i still have the K6-2, it ran for over a decade 24/7 before i retired it.
100MHz bus using sdram and a FIC VA503 mobo.
just dont use the usb ports - usb1.0 was bugged, intel fucked the design spec. (intel again!!)

            Re: AMD wins!

K6-2 was still useable last time I checked.

            I think I still have a SS7 machine, although mine has a Pentium MMX 233, 256MB of RAM and a 4.3GB HDD.
Didn't use the onboard USB either, as I opted for a NEC-chipset based PCI USB2.0 card.
            GPU is a 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 AGP.
            Main rig:
            Gigabyte B75M-D3H
            Core i5-3470 3.60GHz
            Gigabyte Geforce GTX650 1GB GDDR5
            16GB DDR3-1600
            Samsung SH-224AB DVD-RW
            FSP Bluestorm II 500W (recapped)

                With Reliability or in general?

The Problem with K6(-2) was the shitty aluminium heat spreader and also the tooth paste between die and Lid.

Yes, AMD introduced Heatspreader and not soldering the Heatspreader (they then did that with the K8)...

                    Re: AMD wins!

Still have a AMD K6-233 in a Intel chipset motherboard. The machine would actually be stable except I deliberately put in the worst ram I have (it has flaky cells).

It only runs SDRAM at PC-66 speeds, and since I don't really need the computer, it got the bad 256MB PC133 stick. Compound the fact the L2 is disabled with "that much" RAM in the machine...

More in terms of reliability. The Pentium2 kicked the creamcheese out of the K6-2. I actually have a K6-3 450MHz chip around here somewhere, it was a turd too, but better than the 2...but its kind of unusual, so I didn't junk it.

I still have everything I mentioned except the P5A. I now have a second K6-2/500 in a Compaq with an SiS 5598 chipset. It's even slower (mostly because of the early chipset integrated graphics), but it runs okay. USB 1.0 even works.

                          Re: AMD wins!

                          my spec was:
                          FIC va503a mobo
                          512MB of pc133 ram
AGP nvidia TNT graphics, later upgraded to G-FORCE4
                          pci soundblaster card.
                          pci scsi card
                          pci network card (realtek)

it was fucking fast - probably because of the scsi card.

Still better then L1 being disabled, AFAIK. Disabling L1 would make even DOS slow, LOL.
