shit now i'm worried. I wonder if my Master-2 is the wrong thread too. Well, the right thread, but since those are HP, I am assuming they were probably on a proprietary case that probably had different threads

the 7v trick is useless when you are using a 3 pin fan...

which reminds me, sometime soon I need to find new 80mm 3 pin fans for the PSU... what I installed is crap and the tach sensor is broken on one of them.

there are backplates... they seem stiff enough to me. not the flimsy POS's that are black and shaped like an X... these are made from a rectangle of thick sheet metal...

Nope, I kept the new one.... I actually tossed it in a case and threw it together. You got the original one I bought back in 03 when they first came out. Ohh the thigns that motherboard could tell you if it could talk! FWIW, this forum was actually set up on that very board!

              Re: Ratdude's Main rig V2

looked in the manual, turns out the board DOES have temp control on the rear fan... when enabled via a jumper, it sends 9v until a trip voltage is hit, which from there it sends 12v.

I put the undervolted fan back in, only with the resistors removed... not a lot of noise change with the twin CPU coolers...that's hot netburst I guess..

also, under the current Radeon x1300 256mb, the graphics have sucked to say the least... from what I read, the 9800 pro 256mb I have coming soon is a much better gpu... any truth to that?

Depends on what you're doing with it....but an x1300 should spank a 9800.......

that's odd, i read that it went the other way around...

                  Last resort: check benchmarks:

Passmark only has the 128mb versions of both cards... (I have the 256mb versions of each):

                  9800 pro 128mb: 333
                  x1300 128mb: 136

                  (higher is better).

assuming it is a valid benchmark, I'd be inclined to think the 9800 pro is a better card...

                    Two issues here.
                    1. Graphics cards do not have butts they can not spank each other.
                    2. 9800 is a bigger number. (just kidding on this one)

                      http://pc-erfahrung.de/grafikkarte/v...rangliste.html

rank 169 for the 9800 Pro, rank 187 or 192 for the regular X1300

The (for some reason unlisted) X1300 XT on the other hand is about on the same level as the listed X1650 Pro (even uses the same core.. RV535) or a Geforce 6800 (without suffix)

                        made a few major changes:

                        - I got the 3ware card to work... it wiped the hdd; luckily the important files were backed up
                        - I found a way to get around the sata opticals = no boot issue. What I did was I swapped one of the two SATA DVD+RW drives for a fast IDE combo drive out of my HP d530... the idea is that the combo drive is used for booting and the SATA DVD+RW is used for everything else...
                        - due to the hdd wipe, I had to reinstall the OS... right now, I am installing debian testign on it... ubuntu seemed slow (or was that the GPU?)

                        sound good?

it is... but the sound card is hit/miss (via based, go figure) and getitgn TV stuff to work was a FAIL... TVtime's audio was broken, and making mythtv work was pointless...

I found generic drivers for the tuner... I plan to (try to) use mediaPortal to tune (ATI stuff is out due to the QAM driver lockout issue).

(posted from the system in question, cpu-z info to come soon).

xp has been a half-bust as well... again, tuner issues.

I hear the media center in 7 supports my card well and i can get a pro copy for $20 at my collge bookstore... except that this coming week is spring break which means thay are probably closed...

IIRC there is a way to get copies for $30 via microsoft and a .edu email (I have 2)... maybe that route? edit- the pigfuckers jacked the price to $65 (for studends)...

(for now, I will try the 90 day enterprise trial... and yes I am an IT manager testing my company's hardware )

nope... I special-picked the sound card because it had a AC97 header...

installing cent os on it... with RPMfusion there may be a little hope...

                                          found a potential reason.

I was trying to install using the SATA drive since the IDE one wouldn't read it...

turns out that the DVD portion on the IDE drive is hosed... I am disappointed a bit, since I bought the drive NOS about 4 or so years ago (its a lite-on, my first lite-on to die).

I am re-installing xp which I will then try to upgrade to 7 using the 90 day eval copy... (7 booted but even wouldn't see my hdd even after being fed the driver off a flash drive)
