    Oscillscope question

Hello all and good afternoon,My neighbour was on a decluttering on today and offered me some odd electrical parts caps, resistors etc,I was also given a oscilloscope gos-635g instek branded,i know absolutely nothing about the unit to be honest, was saving it from land fill, are these unit old ? Still used worth any value ? Not switched it on without seeking a manual wouldn't know where to start, any advice or view on my post would be a help.

that looks pretty good, it even has a Z-input.

It should be good enough for some troubleshooting that is not needed for anything above 35MHz bandwidth.

                  Re: Oscillscope question

Pretty much any oscilloscope is still useful for something but just like anything else, people want flashy new latest and greatest...

Anyway that tutorial stj linked sort of reminds me of when I got my first scope... I had a old tube scope that used a horizontal vernier instead of a detent selectable timebase. It also did not even have a grid on the screen.

When I learned of newer oscilloscopes and how people are always fussing about this so called "calibration" I was both baffled and mortified about it. Kept on using the old tube scope that seemingly had neither.

When I got my first 2-channel scope, this was the first time I encountered a scope with both a detent fixed timebase and this so called "CAL" ... mortified I say! I was so scared of it due to hearsay about "calibration" I avoided setting the scope's front panel into "CAL" in case it fscked up anything. LOL!!!

Of course this was all a fallacy and I use the "CAL" position frequently - which doesn't fsck with calibration, rather, the scope's screen divisions was calibrated to match up when the front panel controls were in the "CAL" position. Oh this is so nice, can actually estimate both frequency and voltage by looking at the screen whereas the tube scope was merely a guess...

Of course now with digital scopes, all of this is measured and displayed on the screen for you, no interpolation (with the screen) or outright guessing (with the hintless vernier vacuum tube oscilloscope) anymore.

Just a bit of silly history with me and oscilloscopes.

that reminds me, i need to replace my graticule backlight on my telequipment scope for a red led.

i wanted to do that after seeing a very old tek valve-based scope with red illumination.
it really stands out with blue phosphor.

                        Re: Oscillscope question

If you don't have one and need one, it's invaluable.
If you're shopping for one, low bandwidth analog units are frequently passed on for a digital because it's smaller/lighter/flashier/...

if it works then it will probably get £40-50 if the buyer is close enough to pick it up.
