Alienware 17 R1/Ranger la-9331p short

    Alienware 17 R1/Ranger la-9331p short

    Hi, I have an Alienware 17 R1, the customer shorted out a USB port shorting the board also.

    PU100 gets hot when the AC adapter is connected.

    QZ6 is shorted on pins 1,2,3, QZ3 pins 1,2,3 are shorted also so +3V_PCH and +3VS are shorted.

    If I got the identification correct LH100 is shorted on both sides.

    UE1 is shorted to ground on pin 32 (PCH_PWROK).

    PL301 was shorted also but short goes away when PJP301 is uncrossed/dissconnected.

    UI2 is burntout on daughter/IO board.

    CPU and GPU are tested in another system and are good.

    Does the PCH_PWROK short indicate a dead PCH?

    UH8 is shorted on pins 1,4,5.

      I guess when you say "shorted" you mean "shorted to ground"?
      PCH is most likely dead.
      Inspect PCH die visually, if there is a defect or a burnt spot.
      You can inject power on the 3.3V PCH rail, if the PCH heats up it is dead.

        Yes, sorry, by "shorted" I mean "shorted to ground".

        There are dark brown areas around the PCH die. Picture attached.

        I injected 3.3V to the 3.3V PCH power rail and the PCH immediately heated up. :-(

        Looks like it'll be a new board for them. Thank you very much for your help pienov. :-)

          The PCH is shorted to ground, you can do reballing if you do have proper tools and remove the PCH, definitely the short will be sorted as soon as you remove the PCH from the board

            I only have an SMD rework station, a BGA rework machine would be nice to have :-)

            Is it achievable with an SMD rework station? It's a basic 858D from ebay that works well for SMD parts.

              Clear NO. You may damage the mb pcb if you try to remove it with just 858D hot air gun. Moreover, how you are going to install a new chip without a bga rework machine??

                I'll have to put this board aside untill I get an opportunity to use a BGA rework machine. :-)
