    HP 17 DAY11AMB6E0 revE problem

Yesterday i got hp 17inch laptop, no power wont start. Dead.

After pressing pwrbtn 3x blinks white led on dc connector.

No 3.3v, no 5v because nothing on enable pin 1.
    s5_on signal missing.

LDO 3.3v on pin 5 and LDO 5v on pin 7 outputs are good.

    pwrbtn 3.3v good.

    s5_on signal missing.

    schematics and screenshots attached.

Review the charger IC @ PU1.

Meter in DC volts scale (20v or higher is ok).

What are the voltage to ground measurements for the following?

    REGN (pin 16)
    ACDRV (pin 4)
    ACDET (pin 6)
    ACPRES (pin 5)

      dcin 20v.
      REGN (pin 16) 6.00v
      ACDRV (pin 4) 20v
      ACDET (pin 6) 2.68
      ACPRES (pin 5) 2.96

Re: HP 17 DAY11AMB6E0 revE problem

ACDRV (pin 4) 20v its ok
ACDRV is not ok. The 2 x DCin mosfets are N-channel type.

To enable the N-channel mosfets, the GATE voltage must be higher than the voltage being passed between source / drain pins.

If @20v, the gate voltage is the same. A good voltage should be ~25 volts on the gate pin.

As it is common, often the 2nd DCin mosfet is leaky.

Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode.

Measure the resistance across the mosfet pins as follows:

        PQ20:

        Pin 3 & 4
        Pin 3 & 1
        Pin 1 & 4

Measure and post each reading for the DCin mosfets.

        Update:

        Remove PR22 resistor on ACDRV.

        Power up again.

What is the voltage to ground of the PR22 PCB pad pin connected to ACDRV?

Re: HP 17 DAY11AMB6E0 revE problem

For some reason i cant measure pin 4, its varies. But voltage on pq20 gate pin is 25V. pq20 should be fine.
Previosly i measured pin3, its 20V. My mistake

"Do Not add test pad on BATDIS_G signal" why is that ?

          PQ20:

          Pin 3 & 4 0.7 M
          Pin 3 & 1 4.3 M
          Pin 1 & 4 inf

if u insist i will remove PR22 and measure voltage on pin 4

If you have 25V, you are fine on the gate.

mon2, do u have any idea what next ? Missing s5_on signal. Maybe clock generator is bad dunno how to check.

Re: HP 17 DAY11AMB6E0 revE problem

Review if there is a possible shorted component on the board.

Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode.

Check the resistance to ground of each coil / inductor on the logic board. A low resistance may indicate a shorted part causing the power supply to shut off.

Aside from the above, you may have a corrupt bios. Often there is a main bios and a lower density bios for the EC chip. Each can be corrupted and you must load the proper version for your board. Not my area of experience so wait on other comments but start with the power rail review and confirm no caps are shorted.

No power during the resistance checks.

No shorts. Checked all main of coils, and some minor coils.
                  No power on bios chip, there is 3.3v on EC chip U11 on pins 26,50,92,114,121,106;
except +3V not present on pin 11.

                          D6 pin2=0.2v, pin1=zero.
                          R189 0.2v diode side, other side 0.48v
How its possible any voltage coz that voltage coming when 3.3v and 5v regulator, after s5_on....

Yes,no voltage on both pins of D6 is correct. Are you getting 3.3V on pin1 & 3 of Q16 and zero on pin2?? If this is so, Thermal circuit is fine.

Pin4 of edp connector shouldnt be zero but these voltage will be present only when mb is posting. Are you sure mb is posting? Easiest way to check is plug a usb keyboard and check if numlock key glows on toggling it. If numlock is glowing, mb is posting and we can proceed to troubleshoot display issue. If otherwise, problem lies elsewhere and we can proceed in that direction. confirm us with your observation.
