Comet Lake laptop insane temps and memory

I got a new MSI A10M-265. So far it's been pretty good. 15" screen, lighted keyboard. First thing I did was clean the cpu/hs off and apply AS5

This thing has a boost frequency up to freaking 4.9. When it does the temps max at about 97c

I've been using ThrottleStop to cap the multiplier to 35 (3.5ghz). It's been keeping it about 94c. Is this a little extreme? is it designed for this? I've gotten mixed results in online searches. Some say it's ok as long as it doesn't hit 100c, which mine has never hit

Also weird, the single 16gb 2666 stick does not work in the other slot. My 8gb adata 2666 stick (same LP 1.2v) doesn't work in either slot.

MSI has no memory compatibility list. This is strange

It seems the memory has a dynamic latency as well as speed. Never seen this before, but I've read LPDDR4 has a few more capabilities next to regular DDR4

Silly question....check to make sure the latest firmware is on it?

According to Intel Tjunction is 100°C. It's operating under normal conditions below that. At 100°C it'll start throttling to try to maintain the temp below 100°C.
It's really not something unusual on laptops, and especially MacBook have been operating at those temps for ages.

Still beyond infinitely stupid to design a laptop to run the CPU right up against it's thermal limitations. Tjunction may be 100C, however, that's maximum temp. Certainly shortens the lifespan of the CPU and is most assuredly roasting the components around it.
Don't buy those $10 PSU "specials". They fail, and they have taken whole computers with them.

Re: Comet Lake laptop insane temps and memory

The actual temp at which the silicon gets damaged is higher than this. Intel doesn't give exact numbers I think, but once it gets to an unsafe temperature the platform immediately shuts down.
Of course it's always better to keep the machine cooler, but on the other hand people want lightweight, thin and quiet laptops with a lot of processing power, so that's what you get. They're still designed and operate withing specifications, so technically there's nothing wrong with it.

Updating the firmware is the first thing I did. The firmware dates were not that different

There had reports of this chip throttling down. I'm guessing since I rethermaled it before I even started reinstalling windows, it stays below 100c. Still not comfortable with it that close to tj so I used throttlestop

Performance is actually not too bad even without boost (even when playing borderlands 2, which is very cpu intensive)

What you think about the ram issue?

I just looked it up and its a 10510u 10th gen and still on 14nm I would send it back and get a ryzen 7 4700u laptop you would save money and have a much cooler running 7nm chip.

I've been going through ryzen 4 laptops and the only one with what I want is 14" (Nvidia MX330/350). The RTX/GTX series are too hot and take up too much power

If the memory slot is indeed broken i'll probably return it to newegg and refund so I can get a different model with a MX330

I couldn't tell from newegg but did your MSI have dedicated graphics or just the intel graphics? either way looks like a nice laptop.

Re: Comet Lake laptop insane temps and memory

integrated. This is part of the reason I want to upgrade memory, because it has one 16gb stick. Dual channel increases APU performance significantly.

There is a version of this laptop for only a little more that has a MX330 (sort of like a glorified GTX 960M)

Heat sink is bigger, but I bet I would have to rethermal both the CPU and Nvidia chips

If this one does indeed have a bad memory slot it's still within return time to newegg and i'll try to get a refund and upgrade

One thing I love about this is it has TWO M.2 NVMe 2280 slots. I currently have the 512 that came with it and my 970 evo from my now dead lenovo 6 flex

Your AS5 needs time to cure, once it has the temps should drop a couple of degrees.
