12v DC - 240v AC Inverter / Battery charger failure

12v DC - 240v AC Inverter / Battery charger failure

The device currently works only as a battery charger, taking in 240v AC and outputting enough to charge a 12v DC battery. 3000 watt capacity.

Reading the AC output in inverter mode with no load attached showed very small voltage fluctuating below 1 volt.

I am thinking it might be capacitor related.
    • - The device makes a pulsing beep when in inverter mode
    • - Fuses look fine
    • - Fans (all 12v) functioning fine
    • - Some white gooo on one of the coil things

Picture attached. Any help or pointers most appreciated.

i dont see the guts of a 3kw inverter there!looks cheap and nasty.

Can you take a picture of the whole board? I sure hope that transformer is for the battery charger, because if it's for the inverter it'll do 400W tops and that's with adequate cooling. Long stretch to 3kW from there.

400... on a good day... under oil.

Real nice with that IC's marking sanded off.

Did they actually think paralleling those diodes would increase their ampacity?? Device with lowest Vf hogging all the current comes to mind.
        "pokemon go... to hell!"

        EOL it...

I thought that was incorrect as well, but that is common practice in many applications. However, I haven't seen anyone try to connect more than two diodes in parallel, and there are at least eight connected in parallel there with huge solder blobs between the leads.

            What brand is it?
Soldering looks sloppy, and why were several diodes on the right used instead of a few higher power ones.
In some cases, I can identify ICs by making a circuit with the surrounding components. It might be a TL494, who knows?
My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.
