    Re: ASRock mobo with OSTs

The problem is that most newer PSUs have strong 12V rail(s) and 5V is weaker.
    Total +5V & +3.3V power:
    SkyHawk: unknown
    MS Industrial KYP-350W: 188W
    DTK PTP-2007: +5V&+3.3V total output 110W
And as you can see from above, the ratings printed on the sticker have no meaning.

      Re: ASRock mobo with OSTs

The KYP-350W is quite OK for K7 if
it can really give out 188W combine power.
      However, I think it can't!

SO, in drawing a conclusion, don't said
those m/bs poor or good without even
given them enough power. A different
PSU may lead to a different story.

You don't need to chose High-end PSUs
but also, don't chose those very cheap .
For ATX 12V 2.0 or later versions PSUs,
even 500W to 600W , they only give
      around 150W on 5.5v & 3.3V combined output.

My huntkey 300W give out 180W combined power.
It is ATX 12V 1.3 version. and It runs more or less
      up to its specification.
It costed me under 200HKD only.
      ( 200HKD = 25.6USD )

All in all, chose a right PSU for your m/b.

We're interested in seeing a pic of your Huntkey 300w, hkivan. Post a pic in the PSU pictorial thread.

I dont have a digital camera.

In fact, I brought it in ShenZhen, a city of china that
just next to hongkong. Many of the PC parts there
are a bit expensive than HK.

I've just had the same issue, a K7S41GX I've been using for testing and generally messing about with suddenly refused to POST, on investigation I found the northbridge supply transistor Q15 had popped its clogs (actually it fell apart as I was unsoldering it). Its a C5706, and as I've not got anything remotely similar handy I just bunged in a 2SD1802 ripped out from another board to test, and it works... but I'm not happy so I'll have to find something better before long.

K7S41 has very serious problems with IDE bus loading - it corrupts data with slightly longer cables.
There's a setting in the BIOS for IDE drive strength - but I've no idea why or what it actually does.

ASRock P4i48 and P4VT8+. There is no ATX12V connector and the Vcore MOSFETs are connected to 5V.
That's oddball! And even with socket A, things were being migrated to the 12 V connector!

Thus, probably the latest motherboard running off the 5 V rail is the Asus A7N8X family.

                Re: ASRock mobo with OSTs

Putting Vcore on +12v was 'recommended' by Intel's design guides way back since the i810 chipset but no one (or few) made the switch until P4.
                -
Reason was probably available PSU's at the time had about squat on +12v and Mobo manufacturers didn't want to tell people they had to buy a new PSU too if they wanted to use their boards.

Look at Vcore VRM in figure 4-1.
