    Re: Is this components compatable?????

i have done loads of RTC's

    there are 3 types,
1: a normal chip with some pins bent up and a battery & crystal on top.
i cut the resin on those to remove the old battery and leave the crystal end untouched.

2: an almost normal chip with crystal and battery contacts at the ends.
i completely remove the resin on those and fit a new crystal and battery.
mainly because you can split the chip away from the rest of it.

3: a pcb with an smd chip and a crystal in the resin.
i have not managed to strip one of those without destroying it yet!

Yes, it's a CR1220 that was embedded in the plastic. (ODIN OEC12C887A if I remember correctly, the lid is gone...) I completely removed the old cell from the chip. I had no idea what to expect when I was digging into it, other than the silicon was at the bottom and the crystal was somewhere rather... Cell probably in top center so that's where I cut first.

Anyway, the RTC and RAM still works on the chip as long as I have a good battery hooked up (external AA cells, new CR1220, etc.), but the quiescent current flow was unacceptable, it was in the milliamp range IIRC. I had another CR1220 hooked up but the measurements only indicated the new cell would last a couple of days so I gave up on it.

The board is a dual ppro board... what use is this board anyway...

For fun, here's what happened to the chip I ended up desoldering it from the board after the in-situ lobotomy. The board now has a socket that I cut up from a 24-pin DIP 0.3" socket (note that this IC is 0.6")...

Anyway yes this is 100% planned obsolescence (averted?).

was it drawing high current off-board too??

          Yep, draws 8mA off board.
