I am a real newbie to this stuff, agents and tecsa want nearly R3000 for a new PC board. If the replacement of the capacitors work like it did for RickyZa, then it saves me huge.

Be sure to order replacements for the electrolytic caps as well!

C9: 470uF 10V? electrolytic (P=?mm)
C5: 100uF ??V electrolytic (P=?mm)
C4: 1,000uF 10V electrolytic (P=?mm)

C10 - 0.47uF 250VAC metal film (P=22.5mm)
C11 - 1uF 250VAC metal film (P=22.5mm or 27.5mm)


If you can check/update the some of these numbers to help others.

I am planning to take the board out tomorrow to work on replacing the Capacitors.

Hey guys, i see things have been happening over here, i need to configure my notifications as i got nothing.

In anycase the Panasonic caps you posted are the exact ones i ordered Hanson, i just double checked and stock numbers are indeed the same.

Wayno did you manage to solder those new caps back on ? If not i can find the pictures i took of the finished job, they somewhere although its really simple, they bipolar ofcourse so you can mount them anyway you like.

Did you manage successfully actually getting the top cover off and getting the actual pcb out ? Thats a bit tricky.

They are insane, i mean for such a simple board ... You get brand new Defy's that are the same size for R4500 these days. This should work for you especially if you have the same problem as i mentioned in the post. Let me know if you need any other help !

No I haven't had a chance been putting it off for a while, just moved house and trying to sort out chaos.

The top cover is a bit tricky and I wanted to spend more time in it so I don't break any plastic clips. Any pointers?

Hey guys just an update, i installed the two capacitors the ones that i linked in the post when i quoted Red and the fridge is back! all settings are working! i havent replaced the electrolytic capacitors just yet, not really keen to tinker more if i dont have to, what do you guys think should i replace them now ?

To anybody else viewing this thread this fridge is a Whirlpool WRF40, i should of put this in the topic but hey maybe this post helps you pick it up : )

See post #14, he replaced the two film caps. one is 1uF 250 VAC, another one is 0.47uf 250VAC.

replaced the two film caps. one is 1uF 250 VAC, another one is 0.47uf 250VAC

The fridge now works on ALL settings just like the first day we got it 15yrs AGO

Thanks guys been looking for a solution to this problem on My Whirlpool for about 12 months now. I'm going to order the caps right now and change them.
This will save me a new fridge as mine is now only working on one LED.

A note on why those Poly caps actually might be failing. On dropper circuits you can run into an issue where the "Self healing" nature of the capacitors essentially removes/damages the metalization on the film. When I say "self healing" I mean that things like high voltage spikes can cause small perforations. The metalization on the film blows clear which keeps the cap from shorting out. We are starting to see more and more of these types of failures on devices that use poly caps for capacitive droppers/dividers. The symptoms of this sort of failure tend to be a large decrease in capacitance instead of shorts.

You guys don't have to do this, but it would be pretty interesting to know if it is indeed that the capacitance has gone down. If you open up the capacitor, ones that have failed in this matter tend to look mottled and appear to have an almost "receding" sort of metalization on the film instead of sharp/shiny/clean looking.
