    PC sleeps and wakes fine but Windows Update is a bitch

    Got the ShuttleX media center finally setup and tweaked well enough with S3 mode that I can go from dead silent and no power to up and ready in five seconds and from off to booted and ready in 30 seconds.
    Only problem is that Windows Update is f%*@ing around and keeps waking the system up according to its own schedule.
    Initially I had the system setup to check for updates every monday at 10AM. It would wake up every morning at 10AM for four minutes, then go back to sleep. I tried moving this to a later time like 1PM so it was not always waking me up but that just completely broke everything and now no matter what time I tell it to check (again, it does not matter what day I set) it will wake up and stay awake.
    I decide the hell with automatic updates and selected DISABLE AUTOMATIC UPDATES and it STILL wakes up at whatever the last preset check time was.

    What OS?

    Does the service show as Started - Automatic when you run services.msc?

    XP = Automatic Updates

    Win7 = Windows Update

    Is your clock set correctly and for the correct time zone? (Have to ask... )

    Can you run updates manually and does it work?

    Take a look at this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
    The part about the Windows update agent download. Or, try the Fix it.
    Ignore what the stated problem heading is. There are other issues (malware) that can screw with WU.

      Scheduled Defrag and Virus Scans/Updates can do this too...

        Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. No virus scans or defrags are scheduled.
        Automatic Updates was set to Automatic and Started. Because not much comes out of Windows Update anymore, I disabled the service.

        Trust me. It's not Malware or any garbage like that.

            Since you said you turned it off, then it's not the update service.
            Look at LAN connections - adapters. Are they set to wake up system on activity? Any other systems tied to this via LAN?

            Oh, wait. You disabled it. Did you STOP it too?

              Oops. I didn't stop it.
              Okay, lets see if I'm woken up tomorrow.

                But then it went back to sleep.

                  Take a look in the event log and see if that shows anything.

                    Re: PC sleeps and wakes fine but Windows Update is a bitch

                    For the last two days it was behaving like it should, then this morning it woke up and the system hung. Remotes did nothing and the IR receiver was ignoring the remotes.
                    Event log is telling me that the Bonjour Service is crashing and burning a lot. The error is constant:
                    Code:
                    Task Scheduling Error: m->NextScheduledSPRetry nnnnnnnn
                    Where n is a numerical value.
                    It seems to do it at random times during the day but it ALWAYS crashes and burns at 9:59 AM every day.
                    I'll uninstall iTunes and see what happens NOw that I know that Media Center can link to my music library, I don't really need it anymore.

                    Edited: Oh, it's apparently NOT part of iTunes.It's just stuckware that hangs around after you uninstall.
                    Service has been disabled, confirmed it's no longer active by rebooting and checking the log. Lets see what this does.

                          Don't forget to make sure that "wake on LAN" is disabled in the BIOS.

                              Try using a good registry cleaner or manually search the registry for anything related the Bonjour Service and other deleted programs.

                                Okay, disabling Bonjour fixed that part of the problem, now however Media Center Scheduler and Media Center Guide are waking the system up to download listing information. That I am not sure how to change.

                                  Make sure the hardware is good before suspecting the software.

                                  If the memory or hard drive is randomly flipping bits, all bets are off on what you experience.

                                    I'm optimistic of drive or ram issues considering both were well tested before used (DBAN and memtest). It's more that something is not configured properly.
