    2Wire 1701HG Gateway

Hey guys, I have this Modem/Router here and it apparently went on the fritz after a power outage we had due to a storm, recently. When I plugged it in, the lights on the face of the moden would all blink on and off VERY fast and it made a loud clicky sound every time. Nothing on the unit itself looked bad so I decided to open up the wall-wart that comes with it and it's full of bad lytics. It has three culprits: 1 x 470uF 10V, 1 x 1000uF 10V, both of which are bad, and then a big 33uF 200V which still looks good, but it's the same brand; Rifeking.

So I figure I'll just replace the two bad ones with Panasonic FM's or FC's... and something else for the big 200V jobber. You think this will cure it? I don't have a multi-meter so I can't test stuff. But nothing looks burned or as if it got hot. Nothing gets unusually hot when I power it up, it just doesn't work correctly. The wall-wart is 5.1V @ 2A output capability. Does it really need to have those 10V caps?

Hey, you guys take too long! hehe!

Well, I happened to have some 1000uF 10V Panny FM's lying around and I was able to squeeze an 8mm 470uF 16V Samxon into the place of the little 6mm 470uF 10V. It's working again. I don't think I'm going to worry about the 200V jobber.

I don't know whether these should be added to the list of badcaps or not. The 1000uF was bulged and leaking and the 470uF was bulged.

I have heard those 2wire modems are having some major hacking problems.
      http://blog.trendmicro.com/targeted-...ng-via-modems/

Talks about it currently going on in Mexico, where the DNS addy for the major bank in mexico is being changed to a phishing site.

      More about the exploit here:

Eww! Maybe he should get new hardware, anyway. o_o It's funny, too because when he dropped it off he was talking about having his modem redial his ISP to thwart hackers. lol!

1701HG power supply failures have been so common that 2Wire started replacing them for free: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r183...supply-problem

As for the hack, it seems to work only if the router password is blank. It might explain why recent AT&T firmwares make a password mandatory.

Of course, but how long until basic hacking features start creeping in. The top 10 most common passwords would be a good start. pasword1, pass1, letmein, myspace1, 12345678 and so on.

you can teach folks good security practice but cant force them to do it.
seems the best teacher for most customers is about the second or 3rd time the machine gets owned.
when it costs them to get it fixed they learn fast.
and we get plenty of the 2wire psu in for repair.
american thieves and thugs wants $200 for the new hardware.
unless it got zapped by lightning its always the riefking crapcaps in the psu.

theres a funny one on that dslreports thread

even though I can solder, I ordered some adapters.....So based on that I ordered these two Adapters with my power supply:

Yes Rifeking is another crap cap brand I have read about failures on some mobos.

However I have only seen about 4 of them in person on a Kinyo SRS System paired with another great brand Su Scon now if that doesn't tell you something nothing will. They were of course all replaced.

I would say under low stress, low temperature, low ripple conditions most crap caps are fine but in a high stress area like the secondary of a power supply the crap caps fail with flying colors.

Most crap caps will do fine as the Line filter the only time I have personally have seen failures is from voltage spikes and lightning damage.
