    The Notorious Sony "Light Engine"

    Hi,

Does anybody have any technical information on the notorious "Light Engine" problems that plagued the Sony Grand WEGA 50"+ HDTVs?

I am looking at acquiring one that is in need of a Light Engine replacement. If it is possible to rebuild/repair the thing myself (as, even used, Light Engines are selling for $400+... WAY too much to spend on this TV), I'd like to know.

    The model number is KDS-R50XBR1.

    Any info would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Steve

Wizard has posted some information on these. Perhaps a search would have found this thread.

Problem is in LCD panels themselves and not replaceable. The Sony no longer carries optical engines anymore. The last one I had was 2 years ago plus, and Sony told us no more left to replace. When I say, I mean WHOLE thing minus the lamp pulled out and some boards. It was over 1,000 dollars wholesale.

      Cheers, Wizard

Thanks for the tip PlainBill. I did, however, do a search for "sony light engine" and came up with only one search result that didn't match my query. Believe me when i tell you that I don't take posting in forums lightly - search is essential for keeping a tidy place. The good news is that now when someone searches the same, this thread will come back, which will, in turn, guide them to the thread you suggested.

Thanks Wizard, for all your information!

'bout your only choice, unless you can refurb the LCD panels.

TSM http://www.tristatemodule.com/ used to have refurbs, even gave you back the core charge when they receive your broken light engine.
