    HP/Compaq Proliant ML350 G3 FYI

Got this server from a small town that we had just upgraded all their servers. They gave me the server. Took it home and cleaned out the dust bunnies, although the server was working fine, I found 16 bad caps. All of them marked KZG 3300uf 6.3v. I ordered a mess of new caps and I am going to replace ALL the KZG caps on this board.

All other caps on the board are fine. The Server was manufactured sometime around 2003.

because of this, My company is now going to inspect all our customers servers manufactured before 2008.

KZG seems to be the blacksheep of UCC. See note about KZG

Well technically this is a Compaq. Either way, nope these are all electrolytics.

Even the older ones? We have a few g3's still laying around at work... I'll have to pop the covers off and check them out. Most of what we have are rackmount (DL), but we have a few tower models as well (ML).

My IBM server had KZG all over it - hence I have it.
It died in production, customer replaced it.
I replaced the caps and it's all good.

Another Customer, this time a HP/Compaq Proliant ML350 G5. Opened it up to put in more hard drives for a Raid 10 and found 2 swollen and 1 leaking caps above the memory. Server is about 3 years old.

I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

I checked our new DL360 G6's and even these have five electrolytic caps right by the PSU backplane. Four of them are Nichicon 2200uf 16v.

Didn't look at any of our older servers.

                        Update to my original post.

Just finished replacing ALL the KZG 3300uf 6.3v caps Although I thought I was being careful, the server wouldn't POST So I spent an hour or so cleaning up my sloppy soldering work. Electronics are so sensitive! Anyways... The server is up and running again and seems to be just fine

The place I used to work at has HP DL320 servers (either G2 or G3, I can't remember). Most I saw had Nichicon HM caps with bad datecodes almost everywhere and just a few poly's near the CPU sockets. None appeared bad, but I thought I should mention it anyways.
