    soldering station

Hi anyone reckon this will be ok for use on motherboards

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/50w-Soldering-...item45ed09e925

Not a bad price ..I do have a soldering iron kit in a mouldered case but thought this might be worth a shot.

    Cheers

    Re: soldering station

    i don't see a brand, and i wouldn't buy no-name soldering station...

also, the price seems too cheap to be of any decent quality(that ties well with the no-brand problem..heh)

Cheers was thinking the same thats why i thought of posting it on here before i took the plunge, any good recommendations for one that ain't to pricey for a beginner to be going on with.

      Thanks

        Re: soldering station

I have that exact station (N78AR) unbranded yes but it used to retail from MAPLIN electronics uk for the price of £30 now £10
        http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?...C=SO&U=Strat15
I have had no problems with mine (It was secondhand when I aquired it about 18 mths ago)
It has repaired many Monitors, but only a few caps on a few M/boards without any problems
The solder pump is maplins as well, I found it to powerful a suction bought another from a cheap shop that does the job better (with weaker suction)

discussed many times already, for example on first page of this subforum
          https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=7863

do a search on names mentioned there, also search for "goot" and you'll find plenty data.

They're not bad a basic solder station, but, if its the same as the one my mate had, its not true thermostatic. Its just a high-ish powered soldering iron with what is in effect a lamp dimmer connected to it.

It works well enough, but it can be a bit of trial an error to get the settings right.

need the extra tips cos 0.5mm is too small to hold good heat.
no other comment, i dont like cheap tools

Hi thanks for takin a look ...I was also looking at this on ebay but i would need a better tip as this is to fine http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CSI950-Solderi...item4a9a2f1116 It's hard trying to get the right tools ..some say use a normal iron and some say use a station..even some good tutorials on the web show using just a cheap soldering iron ..it's not like i will be using it day in day out..Guess i'll have to make a decision on an iron or station..

station and 3 bits for 15pounds?
i must admit i would take it and think "what if?" later, if i was displeased with it...

you probably get some warranty as it's new...dunno about if they would rma it just if you're displeased with it(?)

                      i like this stuff

                      http://www.dancap.co.uk/soldering/soldering.htm
                      http://www.greenwood-electronics.co....ngstations.asp

imho its good to have a soldering station so you can switch to 450oC for removal of capacitors then back to 350oC for nice soldering. doesnt have to be digital.

For wattage i would want about 60w.

For tip i would want 2mm chisel.

can use corded irons as long as they meet those last 2 specs.

                      heres another goot http://www.canford.co.uk/Products/55...SOLDERING-IRON
expensive though. i would probably go for the hakko 936 at that price.

Might just get this for a test to see what it's like as i will be trying it on a test pc that i wanna recap ( it will either work or not lol) ..15 quid aint bad just to try it out ..i already have a 30w iron and 100w gun ..the 30 w has been ok on stuff that i have soldered and the 50w station is worth a shot for a noob like me he he..

willawake i like those links you have posted and have book marked them ..I can always go for a better model once i have had a few test runs so to speak..

between such things and this cheapo lays solomon stations that would be perfectly adequate, afaik.

but again, for a rookie that won't be using it very much anyway cheapo is a good beginning too...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Temperature-Co...item2c4e169fcc is a decent station for the price - I've got one that I brought at 'backup' when they were on offer and its perfectly OK for doing motherboards and anything that isn't too small like SMD caps as the tips aren't very fine.

do not touch the £10 maplin iron.

                                it's a scam - i got one once.
it's "variable temperature", NOT "temperature controlled"

it's just a 40w(ish) mains iron connected to a dimmer unit designed for lighting inside the base.
then they stuck a lump of lead in it to make it feel like it had a transformer!!!!!!

i just use the base as a stand now for my xytronics iron.

                                  Hi guys ,

Was thinking of buying either this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BK-2000-Premiu...item3357849b63 soldering station or this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Digital-Solder...item4a9d61d8e1

Have been looking for a while anyone have any tips as to whether these will be ok for cap replacement and some small pcb work.

Just can't make my mind up but i like either of these so any good points and bad points.

                                  Cheers

first one says it's a 35w iron - that seems very low.
second one dont say, but the iron looks very small and unusual - good luck with spare bits!

i think your gonna need a 60w iron.
                                    what's your budget?

                                        i'd recommend a xytronics unit,
                                        one of these 2.

but shop around because i'v seen them cheaper.
