Dell 2005FPW - Will not power up but it keeps trying

I have a 2005FPW. Fist the screen was flickering and kept getting worse until I figured I had nothing to loose and decided to try and fix it. I ran across this:

Repair a Flickering 20" Dell 2005FPW LCD Monitor (similar to 2007WFP) - YouTube
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh-7-6Yb0Oc

Upon examination, my c637 and C635 on the video side looked suspect. I replaced the existing Sam Young KGM 16v 470uF 105C 54 b(1) with some Rubycon ZL 25v 470uF 105C T1203 PET replacement capacitors I got off eBay. I think/hope they were the right ones.

Powered up and worked great for about a week. One day I left the room and when I came back the monitor looked like it was trying to power on over and over again. The power button was flashing as well as the #2 input indicator. Nothing was legible on the screen. Even after unplugging the power and the DVI cable, when I repowered the unit it goes straight into the same behavior.

I have a cheapo multi-meter (no capacitor capability). So I can provide some basic information - but I do not know what information to supply.

Upon further examination of the boards, I do not see anything that looks out of place. The capacitors "look" okay as far as I can tell.

From what I have read, C103 and C107 on the power side could be suspect. But before I start randomly replacing things, I would seek some advice.

Attached are some pictures, although the pictures are not mine, they are the same. All I have is a phone camera and the pics were really bad.

    Any thoughts?

This is where I quote our small story of the man who went to the doctors with a bad cough and the doctor said - we will need an xray. The man said you dont need that, here are some of my brother he came last week with the same cough.

Any way - a couple of other thoughts.
Many caps sold on ebay are fakes - perhaps even the seller doesnt know - they buy a bulk lot from somewhere and split them up.

Try replacing the caps on the power supply - see here

This is where I offer up to the Doc... This is what you are working on, aall the parts are the same. I can get you a xray of the patient, but if I can not make out if he has a head or not, I am pretty sure you cant spot a minor fracture.

My case... these pics are the best I can do at the moment. Sorry.

So I have a couple more Rubycon's that came with the original replacements. Should I replace the C635 and C637 again those with the ones I have, or should I order some new ones. If new, which ones? I have no idea the minor differences. I can match voltage, uF, temp, and size - but the rest is Greek to me.

There are a few capaitors on the power board. Do you mean C103 and C107? Again, what should I replace them with?

Did you read the link at the end of post2?

Perhaps read or re read the whole of that thread

Did you put the caps you replaced the right way round?

Post the link to where you bought the caps from.
For the purpose of this exercise if you buy more caps try to get panasonic FR FM or FC series - in that order ( Not all sizes are available in all series.)
        Suggest you try digikey.com

I read and re read that thread and the links in that thread.

Yes, I paid particular attention to installing the capacitors the correct way.

          The capacitors came from:
          http://www.ebay.com/itm/190718937795...84.m1439.l2649

I will stick with those Panosonic series if possible.

I will order some for the C103 and C107 on the power board, should I order and replace the other two on the C635 and C637, maybe replace them with the other I hace from the same source, or do you think they are ok?

I cant believe they can sell real Rubycon caps at that price- do yours look EXACTLY the same as in the ebay pic - pity you have no camera.
As you are ordering two caps from digikey? I would get two to replace
the 470uf25v s - safer in the long run

            Check physical size is ok

They look like the ebay picture... Worked perfect for a week. But I can splurge the extra $1.28...

I will order these up. Got called out of town, but will try these replacements when I get back next week. Anything else I should be looking for?

Re: Dell 2005FPW - Will not power up but it keeps trying

Just an update, I replaced the ebay specials in C637, and C635 again with some recommended above, and while I had it apart I replaced C103 and C107.

Glad to say I am up and running. I will be back if something else goes wrong.

Off to try and fix the other monitor.

Thanks for the help. MUCH APPRECIATED!
