Re: Repair Fence Energizer SS-1000E Fi-Shock

sorry, yeah, i meant "open", not short!! sorry.. so you mean the "wirewound" type are OK as a replacement to this ceramic cement one? I tell u, I'm running around the house measuring resistance and found many objects (rocks, stones, blocks of wood, etc.) with 360Ohm, so tempting to hook them up just kidding may find an old part over weekend.. Thanks, will keep posted!

Yes those are wirewound, and the replacements will be wirewound. If you opened it it would look like this inside

I thought failed resistor is "Ceramic Cement", but can't find it in such lists:

        https://www.lifewire.com/types-of-resistors-818848
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resistor

Is it same as wirewound ? just maybe not wound so much, so in effect the construction is similar?

It might be that the shocker was mis-used, maybe someone put a tool or something that caused the fence to constantly "shock" the tool, not sure, it's very told too

ah, ok, sorry our posting crossed, funny it did not alarm me to reload page due to new posting... Thanks, will go with wirewound and open it up later on..

smash the faulty one open and check, they arent always wirewound.
i have seen the cement box type with ceramic/metal-film resistors in them a number of times.
usually where you dont want inductance or any magnetic issues.

OK, took the advice, and it seems like wirewound. Searching I've found THREE very similar resistors, pair of 470 Ohm 390Ohm, 330 Ohm, all 10W, the question is it going to work with either one? probably not want to mix the existing 360 Ohm...

any thoughts welcomed, that would be an instant fix, no need to ship anything

found another with 350 Ohm / 10W, i think that is close enough to try replacing both

Probably safer to replace one at a time since you're dealing with not-exact matches.

Anyway no point in replacing the other resistor - resistors usually aren't 'wear' items unlike capacitors...

RJ already done the research for you and found the resistor for you so why not order two of them and just replace them.

I was thinking to keep things more 'in balance', but I'll go with that and replace just one with 350 Ohm and see if that works. at this point it's also for educational purposes, sure can order, but that will take few days, until then, folks here are eager to see it work again, farmers are lovely people you know

                        I think tomorrow we'll know

                        Thanks folks!!

BTW: tested the existing/good shows exactly 360 Ohm, the bad one, shows upwards to 600K Ohm, and sometimes 1M Ohm, and sometimes OL so, it's bad

Keep in mind, 600KΩ is near the resistance of sweaty human fingertips from hand to hand, and that's why it's dangerous to touch live voltages...

and on a related subject, how do you intend to test this device?

If u ask me, it's also dangerous touching a failed resistor; why? b/c I've just embarrassed myself

You probably know the rest, but I'll spell it out for those interested!!

I was measuring my own "sweaty hands" as was struggling to make good contacts with the loose resistor now re-testing over and over, it is OL for sure, no nothing, just ===dead=== cut wire or burnt or something..

Thanks for the remark, learning a lot

                                good question:

test1: see if NEON yellow light turns ON.

test2: measure Volt difference between the two external rods.

test3: short them for a split second?? like this maybe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ncPc8iNmyU

test4: take it to the fence and hook to wires, and see if it works

a spark should jump across the electrodes when its working . best test is set up in the field and touch the fence .
