Same way you do the parallel the C102.

"I don't know how to tell if its a low ESR type cap, or what a low ESR type cap is, I know it was a nichicon - but I bet they make many types..." You need to look at the prints on the cap body to get the cap series and then look up the spec sheet for it.

Where do I scrape off and solder in the new capacitor?

I will have to look up the spec sheet when I get off

So do I just hook the negative side of the cap to the negative of c131 and then the positive to the positive?

Yes, isn't that what you did to C102? the band of the Tantalum cap is POSITIVE.

I scraped off some green stuff down to the copper on either side of c102 and soldered it to that haha

The c131 will be tougher due to not much pads for soldering.

                Re: Samsung LN46A550 Power Cycling

The electrolyte in C131 is probably crystalline and when it is heated it turns liquid again and the capacitor start to work.

So can I just take the surface mount one off and put a 47uf 10v or 16v on there?

Replaced both of them and still no dice... replaced with can 47uf caps... still turns on when I put hair dryer in the area...

Are the old SMD capacitors still on there?

Could be your replacements are not good enough. And I wouldn't use Su'scon, they're horrible....

The old SMD capacitors are not on there anymore... I can replace the Su scon but I don't know what to test from there? Should I just order those SMD capacitors? It seems like something else could be wrong with the board... because I replaced the capacitors with Can capacitors and I heat up the same spot on the board and it works... Could be that those capacitors aren't working correctly though...

PS, I did not screw up the board by removing the tantalum SMD caps. I just took them off with my solder gun, very carefully, and replaced them with 47UF 25V Can shaped capacitors from various boards I have laying around.

Cap replacement is most reliable with 47@16v TANTALUM type !
Jumping, paralleling or bridging the bad cap adds capacitance but
still allows the AS7 on the board to cause a problem. So,the best
                            repair is to replace both.

The Su'scon you tried could well be bad with high ESR, or just be too high ESR for this application. Heating the area would drop the ESR which might be why it fixes the problem again - you may have replaced one heat-sensitive capacitor with another!

Try a brand new, low ESR, good brand capacitor instead of a used and possibly defective Su'scon.

What is a low enough ESR for this application? Which capacitor off of digikey or mouser did you guys use?

So you did not use the low ESR cap to try out if it will make the TV to come on. I have done many experiment with paralleling the caps to see how long it will last compare to the original caps, so far none of them came back yet.
