    Add-in USB3 port

I want to add a couple of USB3 ports to an old sever, here, to eek a few more months of service out of it. I can then tether a USB3 SATA dock to it until I get around to replacing the machine.

Digging through my goodie box, I came across a card virtually identical to:

I assume the "floppy power connector" (upper right) is ONLY required to provide the extra current that an external device might require for operation or "charging"?

I.e., leaving it unconnected won't affect the functionality of the ports when talking to a powered external device?

maybe, it's down to the guy who routed the pcb.
plug it in and put something in it with an led on the front - instant answer!

On some cards, the plug is there if your usb device requires addional power or is located a longer distance from the card.
https://www.usb3.com/usb-3-adapter-card.html . This one requires the card to be powerd by the pc for 12v & 5V
